I tried to get it out of an Apple rep at NAB how FCP6 actually deals with mixed frame rates in the same timeline and they couldn’t tell me. It probably won’t be a problem in your case as you have 60P and 60i and FCP6 should have a good way of dealing with that. The fact that FCP6 isn’t shipping yet might me more of an issue for you.
But if you had 60i, 24P, and 25, then I can guess that you’ll want to end up doing conversions the right way instead of just dropping them in a timeline and calling it good.
Until I can get some definate answers, I’d stick with either a cross-convert to HD or a down-convert to 29.97 SD using Compressor.

You could try bringing a clip into Cinema Tools and and conforming it to 23.98. This won’t take out any frames, it will just retime the 30 frames a second to take place over 24 frames a second instead. So your clip will get longer.
I’m not sure how this will effect your audio though. What ever you do, make a copy of your footage before you start playing around with it. Give this a try though.

Your best bet is to digitize it over SDI to 23.98. The Kona card will recognize the flags on the tape and remove the extra frames, converting your 36fps to 24fps, thereby slowing down the footage.
The DP probably isn’t crazy. I had a DP shooting some helecopter footage hand held and he choose to shoot it at 36fps instead of 24fps to make it not so bumpy. It work out quite well.

Are you monitoring it on a broadcast monitor or just the computer monitor? If you export the file, does it look the way you want it to? What is the codec of the footage? What is your video processing set to in the sequence settings?
I’m not sure what causes that, but I’ve seen similar things before.

You could have had it set up for over or under cranking on accident. Is everything in slow motion?

Days like this you wish FCS2 was already shipping. This is a perfect example of where ProRES 422 is ideal.
DVCPROHD isn’t a bad option. It’s not the best option, but it isn’t bad. You might be able to use some PhotoJPEG settings that look as good as DVCPROHD if not better at some good data rates, but I know very little about using PhotoJPEG for that.

Yes, trying to capture 1080 24p or psf on only one Xserve Raid is a little too close for comfort. I’ve been able to do it to a 8-drive SATA raid with easy (400MB/sec+). That was until the raid crashed:(
Do you have “Abort capture on dropped frames” selected in the user preferences? This will let you know right away when you’re capturing if there is an issue.
And just to sound like a broken record, what did the AJA test say?

Which Blackmagic Video output are you using?
With 720/24P you should select View-Video Playback-Blackmagic HDTV 720P 59.94 – 8-bit (1280×720)
If you’re using 10-bit uncompressed, then you should change it to 10-bit instead of 8-bit.
Why not use the 23.98 setting? Because it doesn’t work that way. (It might with some monitors, but with my Sony PVM HD monitor, it doesn’t.)

There are a lot of things that you need to consider if you’re building a san. It’s not just the Xserve Raid that you need.
You’ll also need:
Fibre Switch: $3000-$4000 for a basic one
Fibre Cards for Computers
XSAN software or other SAN software (1 licence per computer)
A lot of time to learn how to set it up best for your configuration.In optimal situations, it is best to a computer that no one touches to server as the metadata controller.
As far as used Xserve Raids, we purchased one off ebay for $5600 for 5.6TB. It was a great deal that I haven’t seen too often. It’s been very reliable so far. We also purchased several other items off ebay.
Setting up a SAN for our 4 FCP seeds has been a really life saver, but it does take quite a bit of research and trail an error to really make it work for you.

Open original clip in QT
Apple+J
Select the timecode track and hit extract
This extracts the timecode to a new file without deleting it from the original source.
Change the selector markers on the timeline of the timecode only file to select the entire clip.
Select Edit-Copy
Open and select the new movie.
Select Edit-Add to movie.
That works for me.
