I’m not sure how to answer that question. Look at http://www.barefeats.com. There isn’t a direct comparison between the two, but it would help.
If it’s a long term set-up, I’d personally lean towards the Mac Pro because I’d want to expand it with capture cards and new graphics cards like the ATI X1900 XT (a very cool card for motion and color.)
Both systems will do what you want though.

Nope, menus and tracks can have different aspect ratios. You change the simulator in DVDSP to be 4×3 or 16×9 to see how the different tracks will play. When you choose how to interpret the 16×9 file, choose letterbox and not pan and scan.

Wouldn’t deck sent it out at 60p to the teranex. The teranex upconverts it at 60P. Then the Kona card would remove the duplcate frames from the upconverted 1080P files? (I guess the teranex might remove the DVCPROHD flags)
We’ll I’m leaning towards using the Kona 3 for it now.

Digitizing to a laptop hard drive can be difficult sometimes because the drive speed isn’t as fast as it needs to be.
You might try an external drive instead.

Thanks Walter. How do you think the Kona 3 compares with using the 1200 deck to cross convert instead?

Whatever you do, make sure you have two copies. We’ll be setting up a DLT-S4 autoloader (about $110 for a $800 tape) and also putting the finished project on a harddrive for easy access. We’ll keep the DLT tapes offsite just incase.
Or you could just use two harddrives. There are a couple of devices where you can just buy harddrives and trays instead of the whole enclosure. I don’t recall the name right now, but if I remember, I’ll get back to you.

I MIGHT feel comfortable using FCP 4.5 on a computer that old and even then only to edit DV footage. I wouldn’t even attempt to install FCP 5 or 6 on the system.
I’d suggest maybe a refurbished iMac directly from Apple with Intel processors. In fact, I’d suggest any Mac with the dual core intel processors (including the Mac Mini). Any of these would give you better results than a G4 tower.

“Get any Intel mac (I suggest a iMac off ebay or from Apple refurbished) and make a commitment that you will sell it if it dries up. But if you put together an out of date system, expect your freelance work to dry up much faster.

I pick up a couple of component DA boxes ebay and they’ve worked great, plus save quite a bit of money too.
