  • Any Ideas on Archiveing Footage from P2 cards???

Posted by Bobby Holbrook ii on June 6, 2007 at 3:23 pm

    Hello Everyone,

I’m trying to find the best solution for archiveing all of the footage off of the P2 cards after the job is done. Will I need to use ext. Hard Drives for each client, dump onto tape or invest in a hugh raid system???? I really have no idea what the easiest, most practical way of approaching this. I couldn’t attend NAB this year so I really feel “out of the loop”. Any Ideas would help.

    Thanks
    Bobby

Best for me are the new Quad Interface 500GB LaCie drives (2 Firewire 800 connectors as well as a FW 400, a USB 2.0 and the new eSATA). They only cost around $250 through MacConnection.com. I just creat a folder with the client name and load the cards into it. When one drive is full I store it and put a new drive in its place. I have multiple clients on each drive so it’s very cost effective. The drives stack nicely and don’t take up much room.

Whatever you do, make sure you have two copies. We’ll be setting up a DLT-S4 autoloader (about $110 for a $800 tape) and also putting the finished project on a harddrive for easy access. We’ll keep the DLT tapes offsite just incase.

Or you could just use two harddrives. There are a couple of devices where you can just buy harddrives and trays instead of the whole enclosure. I don’t recall the name right now, but if I remember, I’ll get back to you.

I copy the P2 cards to a P2 store in the field- and if I have time and a place to work, I also copy the cards to an external hard drive hooked to my HP8000- which has a slot to insert the P2 cards- I use P2 Genie and copy to a seagate External drive. When I get back to my suite I copy the P2 folders from the P2 Store to a Dual Layer DVD. I then import the files to my Avid. Because I’m paranoid- I don’t reformat the P2 store until I need the space for another shoot. I figure it takes about twice as long to import and backup the P2 files than it does to digitize a tape and put it on the shelf when you’re done.

Time- Copy 8 gig card to P2 Store 8 minutes
copy to hard drive 12 minutes
copy and verify DL DVD 22 Minutes
    Import to Avid 8 minutes
    Total 50 Minutes

Digitize 30 minutes of DV tape and put on a shelf- 31 minutes

I archive to inexpensive internal SATA drives. 250GB bare drives. They cost about $80 and I have a $20 SATA to USB connector that I bought from OWC. Two of them archive all the footage from one shoot (100+ 4GB cards). Now, the network I deal with wants this footage as well, so I end up sending them a triple interface OWC drive, which is more expensive…but one that they can plug in a variety of ways.

As for future proofing…when new drive technology comes down the system I’ll transfer to those new drives. Just like we transfer our 3/4″ masters to digibeta. But that hasn’t happened yet.

I have the AJ-HD1400 deck so I archive my P2 to DVCProHD tape. I also archive project files and consolidated media files to hard drive. Eventually I might consider an SDLT unit.
