Final Cut Pro on old system
I’m looking at getting a get-me-by system. I’m a Final Cut Pro Editor in my regular gig, and now I’m getting asked questions about freelance. But I don’t own an apple yet. Looks like I might have a shot at an older dual g4 650 for a bargain price. Final Cut has run on it in the past, but what do I need and where do I look to get this system up and running? It has a gig or two of ram alreay. I’m talking video card specifically, and I will run one or two large monitors. I would buy a new mac, but I don’t want to blow my money on a system for freelance that dries up…

I MIGHT feel comfortable using FCP 4.5 on a computer that old and even then only to edit DV footage. I wouldn’t even attempt to install FCP 5 or 6 on the system.
I’d suggest maybe a refurbished iMac directly from Apple with Intel processors. In fact, I’d suggest any Mac with the dual core intel processors (including the Mac Mini). Any of these would give you better results than a G4 tower.

“Get any Intel mac (I suggest a iMac off ebay or from Apple refurbished) and make a commitment that you will sell it if it dries up. But if you put together an out of date system, expect your freelance work to dry up much faster.
