Hi all, I have a task which is confusing me. It’s about aspect ratios and everytime I try and work it out my head hurts too much! Please bear with me while I explain!

I made a 16:9 DVD for somebody. However they now want another item added to it that will only be played on a projector. This new item consists of material both in 4:3 and 16:9 but mostly 4:3. Now, this projector screen is 4:3 and they want to show the segment in 4:3 aspect ratio anyway and considering it will only get shown on this screen then I can make it with in mind (they want to avoid letterboxing too.) So, I can either resize 4:3 footage to match the 16:9 footage (of course it’ll be a compromise of quality vs streching) or I can make it all 4:3 (which makes sense as most of it is 4:3.

Ideally, what I’d like to happen is when this segment is brought up on the DVD (a seperate track), then the DVD goes into 4:3. However, is this possible, as in DVDSP from what I understand, the whole DVD is formatted as the one ratio. If I drop a 4:3 track in then, what will happen to it on a 16:9 dvd when the projector is in 4:3 and therefore squashing stuff horizontally.

Hope I explained it well enough.

    Ta 🙂

[dylan Tucker] “as in DVDSP from what I understand, the whole DVD is formatted as the one ratio.”

Nope, menus and tracks can have different aspect ratios. You change the simulator in DVDSP to be 4×3 or 16×9 to see how the different tracks will play. When you choose how to interpret the 16×9 file, choose letterbox and not pan and scan.

(I don’t have any problem helping, but you might have recieved more feedback on your post in the DVDSP forum.)

Thanks. So as for the overall dvd project, in DVDSP where you select the formatting options, does it matter if I make it a 16:9 or a 4:3? Or is this just more of a global option to save you setting the properties of all the files and as you said, you can alter each one anyway?

I think it’s just a setting so when you create a new menu or track, that item will default to that setting. But you can still change the setting of the item individually.
