I’ve just tried to export an XML from 6 and import it into 5, but the media isn’t reconnecting right. You might give it a shot. That’s about the only way I know of.

You can use the 3-way color corrector or the levels filter in FCP. You really just need to experiment with it until it looks right to you. Sometimes color correction is counter intuitive. Like if it’s to bright, instead of turning now the highlights, you might make the blacks or mid tones darker. It really takes practice on the best way to get what you want.

I edit an entire show before I start the finishing color/graphics usually. It’s up to you if you want to go shot by shot or by a finished sequence. Different shows require different things.
I wouldn’t bother exporting the file from FCP as uncompressed movie. The file isn’t going to look any better. Just send the file out in the native codec that you’re editing (unless you’re going to do an online edit later). You can save some space that way.

Are you exporting the file from FCP because you want the edits that you made in FCP, or are you just bringing in footage to assemble in AE? If it’s the first, what you’re doing is a good workflow, but if you haven’t done very much in FCP (dissolves, filters) you might just export it as whatever file format you were working in. Also, a exporting it as a reference movie might be worth looking into (though it drives me crazy to use reference movies).

I like to have graphics rendered to the codec and frame size that I’m finishing in. That way, I don’t have to render the material again. This works unless you need an alpha channel.
So what codec are you going to be finishing in? Let’s say it was 8-bit uncompressed in anamorphic 16:9. That frame size is 720×480 and then FCP stretches it to display as 16:9. I would have the animator render out the animation as 720×480 in the Apple 8-bit uncompressed codec. I would bring it into FCP, select the anamorphic check box in the anamorphic column in the browser, then drop it in the sequence.

It works on my system. FCP 5.1.4. Do you have your auto selects turned on?

I often use the capture now and have the -av files left over when it gets to the end of the tape. I just delete them. Very rarely are they anything other than extra useless QT data.
