What and why do I get a -av after the clip name when I capture to fcp or fcp express. I can find no settings for this, either to turn on or off, and some macs can’t see the file as a QT file. The icon is a blank white document and when you dbl-click on it it says it needs some other file to play. How do I get rid of this problem and make sure it doesn’t happen again, as my fellow students and I are having problems with it.

Use log and capture instead of capture now. What you are seeing are clips that have not been finished capturing or have corrupted along the way, usually during capture. Using log and capture ensures more consistent results than capture now.

Also make sure the drive you are capturing to is formatted Mac OS Extended. PC formats such as FAT 32 have a 2GB file size limit, so if you capture media to that drive, it will break it up into several 2GB or lower clips…that are all tied.

AND…make sure that you don’t have a limit on capture option checked (in the capture scratch assignment window). If you have it set to 2000MB, similar things will happen.

Great one! I forgot all about that little tidbit.

I often use the capture now and have the -av files left over when it gets to the end of the tape. I just delete them. Very rarely are they anything other than extra useless QT data.

Ahhh, the beauty of the cow! Thanks Jerm, Russ and Shane! These kids ARE just using capture now, and therin lies their mistake. Thanks again!
