We’ve been using 7200 rpm for years.
Uncompressed HD needs a multiple drive raid to playback. It isn’t for everyone or every project. But some projects/clients need to have the absolute best quality that they can get. That’s when people use uncompressed.
Many, many cow users don’t need it and they finish in other formats like DVCPROHD, HDV, or DVCPRO50 (DV50 is for standard definition) or even other formats.

That could get really messy because 720P 59.94 is progressive, not interlaced. I’m not sure how the card would react. I’m not sure how cinema tools would react either.
It would simplify things if you went to 1080i instead. But there might be a way to do it with 720P.

Rafael makes some good points. If I were you I’d try to fine some tools in FCP for Color Correction (like Colorista or Apple’s Color). But sometimes you need to go into AE for other reasons (serious effects that I don’t trust FCP to do).

Whatever you captured the video as. If you captured as DVCPROHD, export it using current settings. The video isn’t going to get any better quality by exporting it 10-bit uncompressed for After Effects.

You might be able to do it, but it would probably be more reliable not to.

Depends on what codec you digitize to and if you remove duplicate frames. Firewire would always be DVCPRO HD. HDSDI can be several different codecs including DVCPROHD, 8-bit or 10-bit uncompressed, PhotoJPEG, etc.
If you remove duplicate frames from a tape shot at 23.98 or variable frame rate, that will affect you file sizes too.

In your home folder: Library/Application Support/Compressor
You can just copy settings right out of that folder an put them on a different computer. Be sure to restart Compressor to see the new settings.

I’ve never heard anything that would make me question their stability. We have a 4-core that works great… most of the time:) (Macs aren’t perfect)

If you’re going to run Color, you’ll only be able to run it at 8-bit because it doesn’t fully support the NVIDIA graphics cards. Hopefully they get it supported soon.

Most of the time the -AV is caused by some sort of corruption in a file being written. I’ve only seen this caused by using Capture Now when digitizing video. Often when FCP gets to the end of a tape, it will close the file and try to start a new one. This new file usually has a -AV extension and has no video in it, though sometimes I have seen usable video files with the -AV in the name. In those cases, I just delete the -AV from the name and keep working.
You’re might be working with source footage that has the -AV in the name and that’s why it is showing up when you export it.
