If you’re going to be doing 1080i 29.97 or 23.98 10-bit uncompressed you’d probably want two Xserve RAIDs to get the data rate high enough.
720/24P uncompressed runs fine on a single fully populated Xserve RAID.
You might just start with ProRes and see if that’s good enough for you and your clients.

Whay is this important in this issue?”If you’re finishing on tape, only certain systems can handle outputting ProRes in realtime. If you’re finishing to DVD, then it’s just moving data and file playback isn’t a big deal. You could even export to uncompressed if you hand the room.

Technically, Apple’s Disc Utility doesn’t care about having the same size drives for a RAID, but I would suggest it as you have.
I wouldn’t buy the drives through Apple as they are typically over priced. Just get the system drive that you want, then add in 750s or 1TBs.

And what color is your render bar? Red, green, orange, grey, purple? (It isn’t purple you’ve probably got some serious problems.)

Well with a three drive RAID in you Mac Pro, you should be fine editing all flavors of HD except for uncompressed. Get a Kona card or the new IO HD and you’ll be able to use ProRes as an alternative to uncompressed.

Or you could just change the timeline from DVCPRO to ProRes when you finish, but I really depends on how you’re going to finish (tape, DVD, web, cell phone cinema…)

Yes, for editing H264 is not a great option and causes extreme render times (as you well know).
Use DV or DV50.

At least with the new versions you can control the gamma of the clips so they interpret right.
It does seem a little silly the it’s taken how many years to even get that?

That might work with a little trial and error. Setting the digitizing in point as the A frame and having your easy set up to be 720P/23.98 (upconverting the SD footage). You might need to play around with it, but that would be slick if you could let the card do all the work.
