If you have a Mac Pro you can test capturing to the ProRes codec. Or you can capture native DVCPro HD and edit in a ProRes timeline.

If you have a G5 you might be able to capture DVCPro HD and then edit in a ProRes timeline, though I’ve heard some issues with that workflow too.

Or you could just change the timeline from DVCPRO to ProRes when you finish, but I really depends on how you’re going to finish (tape, DVD, web, cell phone cinema…)

Maybe a stupid question, but, is it posible some way to capture in prores via firewire?

You can with IoHD and a FW800 connection.

    All the best,

Not directly from camera to computer. As Tom said, with the I/O HD, yes. But so far that is the ONLY firewire device that allows you to do that….and it isn’t even out yet.

You’ll need a MacPro and a capture card to capture ProRes422.

    Think of it this way:

Direct capture via firewire or SDI typically involves simply moving a data stream from a tape source to a computer hard drive.

Capture via a capture card (“digitizing”) enables on the fly conversion to another format or codec as its written to hard drive.

If you’re finishing on tape, only certain systems can handle outputting ProRes in realtime. If you’re finishing to DVD, then it’s just moving data and file playback isn’t a big deal. You could even export to uncompressed if you hand the room.

But who would hand the room to?

That requires some really big hands…

🙂 I guess I need to read my typing a little closer:)

P.S. Could you hand me that room over there too?
