With out seeing the video, I will say yes it is possible.
If you want an actual AE camera, the way to do this is with the new mocha AE v3 which had the ability to export After Effects Camera data.
Using mocha AE that is bundled, then you would need to track the chess piece and export the 2D tracking info to a null. So this method, you will not have 3D rotation, just perspective.
You can check this video to learn about the new 3D camera solve capabilities: https://www.imagineersystems.com/videos/mocha-v3-camera-solve-overview/view

April 30, 2012 at 7:46 pm in reply to: Removing someones eye. & adding maggots (lovely i know)Usually mocha can handle face tracking without track marks and you can avoid having to remove them after the fact. Keep in mind that mocha will give you a “flat” surface, but like you say using warps or displacements will help create the illusion there is depth.
Depending on the motion, you might be able to use the new mocha AE v3 features to get a 3D camera solve and then use FreeForm to do true 3D mesh warp around the face.
You may also have to break the face into multiple surfaces (one for front and sides) depending on the motion.
If I were you, I would avoid using “real maggots” and use a particle system such as Particular with a good source animation OR 3D modeled and animated bugs.
It is doubtful that shooting on a mannequin would really help you here as the motion will not match the actors. If you have the budget & time, using a more sophisticated 3D tracking system like PFtrack’s geometry tracker would be the best way to do this kind of effect, but I do believe that mocha and some ingenuity will get you there.
All the best,

Just to add to this thread, that original “Urban Jungle” tutorial concept can now be solved without a dedicated 3D tracking software like Boujou.
New mocha AE v3 can easily solve this kind of 3D Camera motion, then copy/paste 3D Camera and Nulls to After Effects.
A tutorial that covers this concept:
https://www.imagineersystems.com/videos/mocha-v3-camera-solve-overview/viewSo now the entire tracking and roto can be done in mocha AE v3.
If you own registered mocha AE that is bundled with AE CS4-CS5.5, you can upgrade at mocha-Pro.com
Hope this helps,

The new mocha Pro v3 is available now and will export 3D Camera Solve data in FBX format for 3DS Max.
If you have registered mocha AE that is bundled with AE CS4-CS5.5, than you can upgrade to mocha Pro for reduced price.

No – the version that ships with AE CS6 is not a v3 version and does not align with the v3 versions of other mocha products.
It is called mocha AE CS6 to insure that people know it only supports the AE version that it is bundled with.
Imagineer will continue to put out 3.x point releases throughout the year, but the CS6 build will remain the current feature set.
I think with that we can wrap the thread?

Hi Dave,
There is no marketing speak going on. The drop date to be included in CS6 was very early and simply did not allow Imagineer to get all the new features ready in time.In most basic terms:
mocha AE CS6 is still totally relevant for planar tracking and roto for AE users.mocha AE v3 adds new 3D Camera Solve, new roto and keyframe tools and supports AE users that do not wish to upgrade or require added support for Motion, Boris & FCP.
We’ll try to update that comparison chart in the near future.

CS6 has been updated with mocha AE CS6. Just does not include the features and support found in mocha AE v3 sold by Imagineer.

This is not true and a very important distinction for mocha users to understand. CS6 does not ship with mocha AE v3.
Adobe After Effects CS6 ships with “mocha AE CS6”. This is “NOT” mocha AE v3.
mocha AE CS6 offers the same functionality found in CS5.5 with the added bonus of a send to mocha button to launch mocha from within AE and set proper project setting.
mocha AE v3 is only available from Imagineer Systems or authorized reseller channel. mocha AE v3 contains features not found in the Adobe bundle including:
new 3D camera Solver
new roto tools: Transform tool & Join Layers
new dopesheet keyframe editor
updated layer manager, shortcuts and moremocha AE v3 also supports Apple Motion, Final Cut Pro v7 and Boris FX.
mocha AE v3 also supports AE CS4, CS5, CS5.5 & CS6 for those not ready to upgrade.
Upgrade is $195 from any registered mocha AE bundle version.
