Hi Peter,
Yes, that footage will be used in a movie that is currently being finished. I will keep you posted.

It’s a common misunderstanding that the BBC “only” uses FCP X for news and sports. BBC Factual exclusively uses FCP X for long-form documentary and other factual work. And 14 regional production companies (any kind of programming) are making the switch from FCP7 to FCP X as we speak. I will be visiting them next month.

I don’t see it that way. I like the fact that more and more feature films get edited in Resolve, but this does not affect the vast majority of FCP X users at all. Enhancing the color tools in FCP X has little or nothing to do with the feature film market either. It simply gives FCP X users very powerful color correction tools right inside the application without affecting realtime performance, which was not possible using the existing third party solutions.
As it stands now, and especially in the feature film world, I think Resolve is much more of a threat to Premiere and Avid. They are all fishing in the same pond while Apple seems much more interested in the ocean (-:

Oops, I notice that the link to Alex’s article has been scrambled. This is the correct link:

You hit the nail right on the head, Tom. And not only for the 360/VR part of the game.
The new VR tools in FCP X are way more than just the Dashwood plug-ins being integrated in the NLE interface. Alex Gollner, who has quite some experience with VR and is a good friend of Tim Dashwood, says that “the next version of Final Cut Pro X will be the first professional editing tool that inherently understands spherical video.” And he has explained this in more detail here: https://medium.com/@alex4d/apple-to-introduce-next-level-professional-vr-video-tools-in-final-cut-pro-x-and-motion-5-855226168aeb
The same goes for the Color update. It’s way more than just color wheels being added to the toolset. IMO the color wheels are actually the least important feature in this update (although they do look pretty neat). It’s about being able to add very powerful corrections without affecting realtime performance, even when working with high resolution media on standard hardware. That is something that cannot be achieved with the current third-party color plugins for FCP X, and it’s something that other grading and editing applications still struggle with. So it’s a very welcome update that goes far beyond “features”.

For me IBC 2017 has been very interesting.
The IBC floor was indeed less attended than in the past years. That’s a tendency we can see with many larger professional media fairs now, which makes me wonder if such global events are still relevant for post production these days. But off the floor there was a LOT of activity, also regarding FCP X.
The FCPX World event focused on showing new case studies, workflow sessions and product announcements, confirming once again that FCP X is very popular in Europe. For the first time we heard about how respected directors and editors use FCP X in Russia and in the whole of Eastern Europe, which is interesting considering that some Hollywood movies are actually being made there. The videos should be available in a few weeks or sooner.
The LumaForge demo room at Spaces was constantly filled, we were there with a large team and still we did not have enough time to talk with all our visitors in person. We did demos with our latest systems and our new patented software, we did training sessions with our European resellers and we discussed FCP X integrations and workflows with some very high profile operations that are moving to FCP X. If we did not post anything during the trade fair, that’s only because we did not have any time.
Although Apple does not have a booth at these events, the FCP X team was clearly present at IBC. They were watching many of the FCP X World presentations, sitting down with power users and taking notes. They were also on the IBC floor. It was a real pleasure talking with them and exchanging ideas. Looking forward to what will be shown at the Summit.

Hey Tom,
What is the video format you are working with?

I don’t think we will see Intel i9 chips in the iMac Pro:

Roger did a demo with the beta version during our Faster Together event at NAB. The commercial version should be ready by September, we are expecting a live demo of the full version at IBC. Looks promising indeed.
