May 11, 2010 at 6:48 pm in reply to: Storage and backup options during travel

I have a small laptop and I use two 500 gig passport external drives.
Being the paranoid person I am, I back up each card at night on to the two external drives one at a time. The laptop has the card reader built in and it actually transfers quite quickly. I feel safer with two sources of back up until the project is completed and then I dump the clips the whole folder that the project is in to a large external drive for archiving.

    Good luck

I have had both the EX-1 and now the EX-3 and I must say thse two cameras have been outstanding in every respect. The quality of the video I get from these two cameras is stunning.

April 19, 2010 at 10:06 pm in reply to: Best place to buy EX1

I totally agree that B&H or Armatos in NY are the best places to buy a new camera. I have bought several cameras from Dennis Hopkins at Armatos and their service after the sale is second to none. I had a new camera go down on me the first time I shot with it and they sent me another camera next day special delivery so that I could make my next gig 200 miles away. Their prices are competive with B&H. I have bought cameras from B&H prior to the last three cameras I bought from Armatos and have not had to use their after the sale service. I think that they use a service company when you buy and extended service policy or you have to send the camera back to Sony rather than interact with them on a loner or replacement basis. In my case the camera came the next day and I shipped the defective one back to them several days later.

The after the sale service from Armatos is the best in the business.

April 16, 2010 at 9:08 pm in reply to: Palmcorder recommendations with EX-1

I have been using a Sony 520v and shooting full HD with it. Surprisingly, it looks pretty good when cut with the Ex-3. It has large hard drive and is just about as big as your hand. We shoot dirt racing video and use the small camcorder to get in-car shots and close ups when a wreck happens.

April 6, 2010 at 7:12 pm in reply to: Is it better to edit XDCAM EX natively?

Edius/Grass Valley handles EXcam clips natively. All you have to do is open up the Sony software browser and highlight the clips you want and drag them to the bin. Highlight the clips in the bin and with one more click they all appear on the timeline.

February 24, 2010 at 2:39 pm in reply to: White balance and lighting

Unless you are going to do a lot of camera moves Panning and so on, I would use a white warm card to WB near the subjects position. Now if this is part of a bigger project with many clips from different lighting conditions, it will be a job for the color correction properties of your editing software…..

January 13, 2010 at 7:17 pm in reply to: cold temperture and the EX-3

Both me and the camera were dirty. I left the camera out of the case in my edit suite until the next day. After cleaning everything up I checked it out and it worked perfect. This has been my second EX camera. I bought the Ex-1 shortly after it was available. In about 8 months I put over 100 hours on it shooting Late Model Dirt Racing.
The Ex-3 came out just as the ink dried on my warranty card and I traded the Ex-1 for the EX-3. It was much easier to hold on long shoots. Now I am thinking about getting another EX-1R for a backup camera.

    Thanks again

January 12, 2010 at 4:18 pm in reply to: cold temperture and the EX-3

Update on my cold weather shoot with the Ex-3. Well it was 17 degrees and lower on each of the two day shoot. The printer for the race scorer froze, My LCD TV with built in DVD player would not take a disk, the plastic head band on my ear muffs broke, my extension cord would not unroll, but the Ex-3 performed like a champ. The LCD screen got a little slow or warbled some but other than that, it performed as usual. I have one of those Pelican cases with the preformed inserts for my EX-3 and I found out that the hand warmers that you can buy at WalMart fit in the inserts. So I put one of those in each battery slot and then put the batteries on top of them. The batteries lasted both days. I know for you cold weather folks that a chill factor of just above zero is normal, but here in the deep south we are just not used to or prepared for such cold weather. This has been the coldest winter in over 25 years for us. At one time it stayed below 32 degrees for three days. Usually in the winter it will at times get to 32 but it warms up to above 50-60 each day.

To sum it up, the advice I got from you folks was accurate. The Ex series performs super in cold weather. The camera operator (me) was the only thing that really had a hard time with the cold.

    Thanks

Thanks Clint for your reply. We are just not accustomed to such cold weather in the deep south. More than likely what we are experiencing is a nice day for you. A friend of mine who used to live up there told me one time that the only thing that separated North Dakota from the North Pole was a bob wire fence. Would it be possible to use the charger for a source of 12 volts and leave the battery on the camera? That way i could unplug and jump down on the track to shoot the interview of the race winner.

    Thanks

    Ronnie
