I’ve been working with the AJA folks on this, and they are going to send me a replacement unit to see if my current box is the problem.

The canvas is fine. No tearing.

The graphics generally come from photoshop and brought into FCP as a high quality JPEG or photoshop files. I’ve also generated graphics using FCP’s title generator. All were rendered in the sequence and still exhibit the video tearing.
The rendered sequence file format has been both XDCAM EX 1080i60 (35VBR) and/or 1920 x 1080 Apple ProRes 422 (HQ).
As mentioned earlier, FCPs video output has been matched with the sequence (in both my MacBook Pro and my MacPro).

I too am having problems with my IoHD with HD graphics. In fact, here is what I sent AJA yesterday. I’bve not heard back from them yet.

I’ve got an AJA IoHD (v. 6.0.3) and have it connected to my new MacPro (2 x 2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) with 12GB of Ram, running OSX 10.5.6, with FCP 6.0.5. The problem I’m experiencing also occurs when connected to my MacBookPro.When doing work in HD (sequence in FCP set to Apple ProRes 422 HQ and the video playback set to the AJA HD 422 HQ setting) I get instability in the video outputs (both HD and down converted SD) that looks like video tearing. This only occurs when I’m working with high resolution graphics in the FCP time line. If I enlarge, or zoom in, on the high resolution graphic, the tearing will stop if I find “a sweet spot” in the graphic.
The images are stable in the canvas and viewer windows, but not at the output of the IoHD.
I’m running the HDMI out of the IoHD into my HD monitor, and I’m running component video (down converted) into my conventional SD analog monitor.
The tearing occurs when the FCP time line is either parked (still framed – either full frame or field selected on the AJA IoHD) or while playing.

I just finished teaching a college level video documentary production course that tried to concentrate on “story telling” and not technology. In today’s environment, it’s impossible to separate them, but that’s what colleges and universities are trying to do.
The instructors and professors that I’ve run into have no clue how to edit on NLE systems (much less trouble shoot). They live in a theory based world and generally don’t want to be distracted with “technology!” The students end up teaching NLE basics to each other, and succeed in spite of their instructors.
I’ve been a video producer and editor for 35 years. At the age of 59, the software is becoming a bit more complex (too many brain cells lost doing all-nighers), but it is absolutely essential to “know the tools” so that the “story” can be told just the way you visioned it.
In today’s world, a successful video story teller is a shooter, editor, colorist, graphic artist, animator, audio sweetener, computer Geek, and most importantly, a writer and story teller.
Have I left anything out?

Thanks for the responses. It would be nice if we did have both composite and a component outputs at the same time. We run our monitors with the component output and need composite with our waveform monitor. It’s a shame that we have to choose or purchase an adaptor such as a SDI to composite, or component to composite.

I’m using the AJA D5CE as the component to SDI converter. Then, I’m going into the Kona2 via SDI. As for FCP5, I’m using the AJA presets for 525 1080i 10bit and 8 bit. Now, for a 10bit clip, the properties say it is 1920×1080, Umcompressed 10-bit 4-2-2, Square pixel, Upper field. For the 8bit clip, the frame size is 1920×1080, Uncompressed 8-bit 4-2-2, square pixel and upper field.
When the sequence setting is set for HDTV 1080i (16×9), the frame size is 1920×1080, square pixel, upper field and Uncompressed 8-bit compressor. With this setting, the 8-bit clips work quite nicely.
When I use the AJA preset for 10-bit, things change. The frame size is 1280×1080, aspect ratio is HD (1280×1080)(16×9). Square pixels, upper field and Uncompressed 10-bit compresssor. The 10-bit clips do not run on that timeline. When I change the frame size and aspect radio to equal that 8-bit, but using the 10-bit compressor, the clip indicates that it doesn’t need to be rendered, but it plays back as if it were strobbing or jittery. Not smooth like interlaced video should look.
What should the settings be for importing Sony’s HDV Z-1 footage through the SDI 1080i input? What should the timeline settings be?
