I’m working on my first HD program and I’m having some difficulty setting up the system for HD with the Kona2. I’m trying to digitize Sony Z1 HDV footage using a component to HD-SDI converter and then using the AJA 1080i 29.97 10bit setup for both Capture and Sequence time line. Whenever I set it up for a 10bit timeline (which is setup for 10bit uncompressed to match the capture settings) it shows that I have to render it with the dreaded “red line”. When I set it up for 8bit, everything is fine, the picture looks great, and I get real-time playback with no rendering required.

    I’m using FCP5 with 10.3.9 on a Dual 2.0GB G5.

    What am I doing wrong?

Whose converter? Might be something there that’s wonky. Is it AJA’s converter? or?

What do the properites of a captured clip say?

What do your actual clips say in the Browser? Are they actually capturing exactly as you think they are? I’m suspecting that the clips are not truly coming in as you think you set them. I would look at the Frame Size, Codec, Frame Rate in the Browser to confirm everything is as you think it should be.

I’m using the AJA D5CE as the component to SDI converter. Then, I’m going into the Kona2 via SDI. As for FCP5, I’m using the AJA presets for 525 1080i 10bit and 8 bit. Now, for a 10bit clip, the properties say it is 1920×1080, Umcompressed 10-bit 4-2-2, Square pixel, Upper field. For the 8bit clip, the frame size is 1920×1080, Uncompressed 8-bit 4-2-2, square pixel and upper field.

When the sequence setting is set for HDTV 1080i (16×9), the frame size is 1920×1080, square pixel, upper field and Uncompressed 8-bit compressor. With this setting, the 8-bit clips work quite nicely.

When I use the AJA preset for 10-bit, things change. The frame size is 1280×1080, aspect ratio is HD (1280×1080)(16×9). Square pixels, upper field and Uncompressed 10-bit compresssor. The 10-bit clips do not run on that timeline. When I change the frame size and aspect radio to equal that 8-bit, but using the 10-bit compressor, the clip indicates that it doesn’t need to be rendered, but it plays back as if it were strobbing or jittery. Not smooth like interlaced video should look.

What should the settings be for importing Sony’s HDV Z-1 footage through the SDI 1080i input? What should the timeline settings be?

    Thanks,

    Ron Frank

    Hi Ron-

The D5CE is a standard-def converter, not HD capable. You need the HD10A for HD analog to HD-SDI. This converter is readily available in our sales channel from a dealer near you.

Please call or email us for more information.

    Thanks-

Well that certainly explains that! Good to know.
