Thank you for that, Michael. Not being a Blackmagic guy, I didn’t know that. I’ll check.

Certainly there can be problems with any vendor. But I have checked this vendor out well and their services are high-end; not cut rate. If they can’t deliver a codec that I can use successfully then I’ll obviously move to another vendor. That’s why I’m asking for expert advice here on whether the Blackmagic AVI is a problem or is acceptable. It’s not an adversarial situation; just a business decision that needs to be made.

I appreciate all the input. I’m still hoping to find out if the Blackmagic AVI is a problem or is acceptable.

    Thanks, Chad.

Yes, I don’t see where my Kona 3 would have any bearing on this question. I just included that information to give context for my question. It’s good to hear that you’ve had some success with some AVIs on an FCP timeline. I’d be interested in hearing what experience others have had using Blackmagic AVIs without having Blackmagic hardware/software installed.

    Or whatever advice is relevant.

So, as I am about to do a clean install of Snow Leopard and FCS3, will a simple setting of gamma levels to 2.2 solve all of the gamma issues that I’ve been reading about on the forums? I just need to be sure (as usual) to use a well calibrated external monitor? Do I understand correctly that there are no Kona 3 issues that should encourage me to wait for a software update before putting the new system into real production?

    Thanks.

Yes it is. I mentioned the posting on the other forum when I posted here. I thanked you for your help there and repeat those thanks here.

Sounds like an interesting idea. Now I’ll have to learn how to use the particle effect. Ha! Told you I wasn’t expert at this. But I’ve located some tutorials on that.

While I proceed with those, if anyone has any other thoughts I’d appreciate them.

    Thanks Todd.

Chris has it right. As I see what’s going on in the video it was just a simple wipe to remove the text as the body moved past.

Do the re-sizing in AE. It avoids this rendering issue and it’s better than doing it in FCP, anyway.

It’s always a good idea to do a search of the forum for answers before posting a question. Try this string and see if it helps:

Would those settings work if the footage is 720p30?

No, they wouldn’t. That deck is capable out outputting 1080i through the firewire but not 720p. It will play 720p tapes but it won’t export 720p via firewire.

If your material is all 720p I think you have two options:

    1. Use another deck for digitizing.
    2. Use the component out of the GV-HD700 and run that component signal to a capture card such as an AJA Kona 3. (Note: I have captured successfully from this deck via component cables — but only 1080i material. I think it will work with 720p but I have never done it.)

Someone here with more experience on this might add another option…
