When I first got my old AG-DVx100 it did the same thing and I thought it had been damaged in shipping. It hadn’t. It is just that when powered up, the lens no longer does this.
I believe that Jan and Team engineered this into the lens so that you can find it should you sit it down and misplace it somewhere — it’s sort of like The Clapper that you see on TV where the guy claps and the lights go on and off. Only in this case, if you clap loud enough, you can hear the lens rattle and find your camera. Handy for those moments when you set it down in a busy subway train and forget where you left it. Just start clapping and suddenly, boom, you have found it. ;o)
Now where are my old Foghorn Leghorn cartoons…???
