I have noticed with my 200 that when it is shut off, if you rock it back and forth, there is a slight clunck from the lens area. Does anyone have any insights into this?

The following was posted on the DVXuser site.(along with a long thread of responses)

    From Panasonic’s HVX200 Service site:

    RECALL NOTICE – 02/13/06
    Lens Refraction Stabilizer Rod
    Part# RTM122PG

It goes on to mention that the issue is with the first gen cameras that were assembled manually. The rod can come loose and, as Oregon mentioned, become lodged in the zoom gears (which is why you don’t hear it when the camera is powered up). This issue is only a problem in cameras manufactured up through Jan of 2006. Panasonic has fixed the problem on the cameras being manufactured now. You should be able to send it in at no charge.

If you read the entire thread it is a joke. The manual even references this. There is nothing wrong with the camera. There is no recall. Just read your manual it is on page 122 under the heading “Before Calling for Service.”

When I first got my old AG-DVx100 it did the same thing and I thought it had been damaged in shipping. It hadn’t. It is just that when powered up, the lens no longer does this.

I believe that Jan and Team engineered this into the lens so that you can find it should you sit it down and misplace it somewhere — it’s sort of like The Clapper that you see on TV where the guy claps and the lights go on and off. Only in this case, if you clap loud enough, you can hear the lens rattle and find your camera. Handy for those moments when you set it down in a busy subway train and forget where you left it. Just start clapping and suddenly, boom, you have found it. ;o)

Now where are my old Foghorn Leghorn cartoons…???

    This is my first Panasonic camera (4 Sony’s – 2 Betas 2-DVs)

So I’m new to Panny’s idiosyncrasies. Also, with anything new who knows what bizarre things might show up?

Thanks for the quick “put my mind at ease” response.

I suspect Panasonic’s tech support calls would be cut in half if this was labeled on the side of the camera in big block letters- RATTLING IS NORMAL, CARRY ON.
