It’s easy to do this…
Just go under the “Edit” menu and down at the bottom you will see “Keyboard Shortcuts” and inside it is a “Set” menu — set it to Quark Xpress.

Yes, the eyedropper tool is a powerful thing, as Kelly attests. ;o)
You can use it for duplicating settings and thereby standardizing things like setting fonts, type styles, object colors, drop shadows and other elements, etc.
As Kelly pointed out, first select an object which contains the attributes you want replicated and then click on the eyedropper in the tool palette, then using it, click on what you highlighted. That loads that/those attribute(s) onto the eyedropper and then you can click on what you want changed and, voila, they are now changed.

You can simply start to highlight the text you wish underlined and drag the mouse until you get to the end of what you want underlined, even if you are dragging beyond the end of a page into text on another page, etc. — which is what I read you to mean when you say “non-contiguous” text. If that is not what you are referring to, please give an example of what you mean.

I think that sometimes people forget the history that Adobe brings to the party, Alex.
Both your post and my own reason that I gave to this question, address the fact that Adobe has a degree of control and mastery of the colorspace/PDL/Postscript technologies that can arguably only come from a company that largely invented these technologies.
I once read one of Adobe’s annual reports to stockholders and it was quite revealing: At the time, the only product at the time that was a “line item” was Photoshop, all the other products like Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere, InDesign, etc., were in the “Other Income” category. The big moneymakers? The money that Adobe makes from all the companies that have to license Postscript, their PDL technology, Acrobat, etc.
This validates why your comment about “syncable color settings that work” is so true and also so important, especially as these products continue to develop and mature.

Hi Charles,
If I had to pick just one thing that really helped me single-handedly design and layout a full 64 page magazine (Creative COW Magazine’s first issue), I would point to the Overprint Preview function that lets you see what your final page is *really* going to look like. While it is not perfect, it is so danged close to accurate that it saved me probably two to three days of time, if I had had to keep jumping outside InDesign to see what things were shaping up to visually. Quark Xpress is not capable of replicating InDesign’s Overprint Preview function, which I suspect is due to Adobe’s patents and knowledge of all the Postscript, PDL, color-space, color-management and other technologies that are at the core of what makes these programs work.
The Overprint Preview function is an amazing asset to InDesign and don’t even get me started on the way that InDesign integrates with Photoshop and Illustrator in ways that Quark wishes that it could.

Kathlyn and I are up in Monterey at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and so I can’t replicate the error(s) right now. I do not remember them right off the top of my head right now. I switched printers after the debacle and so I doubt that I will have the same issues with the new printer as they seem far more on the ball. Everything was an excuse and the answer they gave was “Switch to Quark Xpress..” Me, I would never switch to Quark Xpress. ;o)
Dartmouth Printers in New Hampshire is my new printer and they are quite InDesign savvy and like the program, so I doubt that I will run into the issues that I did with my previous printer who will remain unnamed as I am *mostly* a nice guy. ;o)

I have to agree, the syncVUE system is very impressive. It’s not as impressive or full-featured as the AlienBrain technology that AVID acquired and turned into their new InterPlay system but syncVUE doesn’t cost what InterPlay does, either.
InterPlay is definitely the monster in the field but syncVUE is a strong number two contender from all I have seen so far.
Want to review syncVUE for the next issue, Walter? ;o)

That’s what I thought when I saw it and looked at the price. It’s a very elegant solution for those who want something like this but they will be paying a very strong premium for the privilege.
Nice solution for those who think of their computer like some people think of cars and buy Ferraris, etc.
