    Blase,
First off, great experiment. Sorry for the long post but it’s a doosey! Here’s what I got after importing each XML into FCP.

    -test01:
    –clip01: linked to original media
    –clip02: linked to original media

    -test02:
    –clip01: linked to original media
    –clip02: linked to original media

    -test03:
**clip01 rendered to folder “test03,” and got name MVI_0007b_V1-0001
    –clip01: linked to MVI_0007b_V1-0001 in folder “test03”
    –clip02: linked to original media

    -test04:
    –clip01: linked to MVI_0007b_V1-0001 in folder “test03”
    –clip02: linked to original media

    -test05:
**clip01 rendered to folder “test05,” and got name MVI_0007b_V1-0001
**clip02 rendered to folder “test05,” and got name MVI_0404_V1-0002
    –clip01: linked to MVI_0007b_V1-0001 in folder “test05”
    –clip02: linked to MVI_0404_V1-0002 in folder “test05”

    additionally I did 2 more tests…

test06: rendered out both clips but I used “none” preset with the Render Queue
**clip01 rendered to folder “test06,” and got name MVI_0007b_V1-0001
**clip02 rendered to folder “test06,” and got name MVI_0404_V1-0002
    –clip01: linked to MVI_0007b_V1-0001 in folder “test06”
    –clip02: linked to MVI_0404_V1-0002 in folder “test06”

test07: rendered out only clip02 using “none” preset with the Render Queue
**clip02 rendered to folder “test07,” and got name MVI_0404_V1-0002
    –clip01: linked to MVI_0007b_V1-0001 in folder “test06”
    –clip02: linked to MVI_0404_V1-0002 in folder “test07”

What’s crazy here is that in these tests
    (1) the file names of all rendered clips were identical through the different render versions
    (2) the XMLs worked as I expected them to regardless whether I used the FCP preset or none, and whether I used the render queue or not.

The missing factor here is what happens when you use the render queue on multiple projects at once. I have a feeling that when the Render Queue accesses a project that isn’t opened for rendering something gets messed up with the XML. I will investigate this tomorrow morning!

OK so I tested what Robbie said and I ended up with entirely different issues.
On Friday evening I rendered 4 out of 5 reels using the render queue (preset set to “none” but all settings same as “FCP roundtrip”). Today, to test Robbie’s problem, I chose a shot in one of my reels, gave it a whacky grade and rendered it out again using the render queue set to none. The new rendered file was named identically to the original render, so I figured the problem was solved. I went back to resolve and exported XMLs for each of the reels then I imported the reels into FCP and discovered that the XMLs linked to the old media for all of the reels except for one. The one reel that linked correctly was the one that I didn’t render through the render queue, rather I did it first using the “FCP roundtrip” preset.

It seems that unless you use the “FCP roundtrip” preset the XMLs will not refer to media rendered out of Resolve. This may have been the cause for Robbie’s issues before. Any insight into this as I do some testing here?

OK, but are the effects and plug-ins preventing the sequence from coming through? Like I said, after I close that “error log” window nothing happens. Should I tell the editor to remove all effects from the sequence before exporting an AAF?

    Dan,
I think you’re on to something. I went through the relinking process with 5 projects yesterday and finally I started realizing that it’s not the number of selected clips at all. It seems that if your selection contains clips that previously linked to different directories, it will not relink the selected group. All of the clips selected have to have originally come from the same folder. Problem is that media is often organized in different folders by card or shoot day, etc. One thing I will do in the future is to create a different media pool folder for each media source folder to keep things separated, but I think there should be an easier way to relink.
    Thanks for your help though!

Oh man. I was worried about that. I guess I’ll see on Monday when I make changes to the project! Thanks for the heads up, I will definitely look into it and respond.

  • Since upgrading to Resolve 8 I’ve found that the “FCP 7 Roundtrip” and “Render Clip with Unique File name” takes care of my need because it renders media using the source file name followed by the event#. However it would still be nice to customize output names by defining a template for other uses like Sascha mentioned.

I was under the impression that in order to batch a number of clips together they all had to have the same number of nodes. Is that incorrect? That’s why I’ve tended to stay away from the batch function.
Are you saying that I could grade 10 shots differently, then batch them together, append a node to give those 10 shots a uniform adjustment, then un-batch them to make them all independent again? This is counter to what I understood before but it would be welcome news.

PS. I find that the documentation on Resolve’s functionality is lacking in general. Where do you guys go to look things up?

Sorry I don’t have any input on what might be causing this but I will say that I’ve gone a couple of prores4444 projects without this issue.
I hate when people suggest this but make sure that all of your versions and updates are correct.

  • Thank you Peter.
It would be great if you could define a pattern for the path name similar to the way you define a pattern for retrieving reel names from directory structure in the config window.
I imagine having a set of commands that you can use to customize the folder names (event number, time stamp, version number, etc.).
That would be extremely helpful on projects with frequent grading tweaks that have to be “recompiled” in an NLE, as you would be able to manage your grades by which folders they are written to.
    Thanks again.

    Gareth,
My bad, I misunderstood your question. Now I know what you mean as I’ve come across this issue on every project so far and I’ve always had to revert to applying grades one at a time.
