I’ve been frustrated by this issue for a while. The curious thing is that sometimes when I bring in an updated VFX shot into the media pool, Resolve swaps the shot in the timeline and keeps the grade!? I haven’t been able to track down when it works and when it doesn’t, all I know is that when it doesn’t it’s a major issue, especially because you could unknowingly output your finished program with ungraded shots. DaVinci must put control of shot replacement into the hands of the colorist! I deal with this in nearly every job I do and it’s a time killer as well as a huge liability.

Enough complaining. To protect against this, I’ve gotten into the habit of saving stills of shots to be replaced so I have them available in case the grades disappear. Of course you have to redo all your tracks and keyframes which is a bummer. It’s also a good idea to duplicate your project before doing any major replacements.

After notching the whole film I’ve found that doing the film in reels is much better. The system was getting sluggish when I tried to force scene detection on long durations. Of course I always work in reels for grading but I thought since I was just notching and doing pan/scan that it wouldn’t be an issue.

In other news I have found that working in the scene tab is a bit cumbersome. Little things like:
-the way you zoom in and out of the timeline
-sometimes my navigation keys and buttons stopped working
-sometimes when I zoomed in the timeline “disappeared” until I hit reset twice, etc.
I’d like to see this feature set become easier to use in the future.

Update.
I saved the scene file from my initial notching, restarted Resolve, loaded the scene file, got my previous notches back and now it’s letting me continue scene detecting.

Question, should I work in reels anyway?

In the Conform tab, when you park your cursor on the problem clip, check what the EDL says for that clip (lower-left corner of conform tab) regarding the TC and REEL info it’s looking for. Then cross check that with the correct clip’s info in the media pool. Sometimes things get messed up, it may be easier if you just manually cut the correct clip into your session.

No problem.
Open your render window as usual and configure all your settings as you need them (including destination path). Then click on the little plus sign under the Render Queue panel (lower right of the Render window). Now exit the render window, save and load another project. When you open the render window in another project you’ll see your previous render is in the queue. Repeat this until you load all of your intended render jobs and on the last one click “Start All” under the Render Queue panel. Resolve will open each project and render it in succession.

One Big Caveat: is that when Resolve finishes rendering a project, it opens the next one without saving, so if you need to export XMLs out of Resolve (the next morning) to send your exports to FCP it won’t work. At least that’s how it was before Resolve 8, maybe they’ve fixed it now.

Did you happen to upgrade Resolve since those projects were worked on?

I had something similar happen to me after upgrading to 8. I opened up an old project and noticed that a particular shot’s grade was messed up. It was a shot that had a lot of masks combining through a key mixer node and the way the masks were mixing when I opened it was wrong. Other than that everything was fine.

It’s a fact that Resolve doesn’t natively work with XDCam EX files. You would need to transcode the files you want to grade with to another codec in order for Resolve to see them.

I’m trying to follow your explanation but what do you mean about copying the key from one clip to another? If you copy qualifying data from one clip to another then it wouldn’t work. How can you copy the finished key information from clip to another?

Does anyone know of a work around? It seems that my input transform settings worked well for a while and then started acting up as the project progressed. I’ve tried setting the presets in the the conform page instead of the format page and it seems to be better although I can’t figure out why some clips stay properly transformed and why others revert back to their default.
Any input?
