February 27, 2014 at 3:21 pm in reply to: Tracking a glass “iPad”

Extraneous movement in the background, behind the glass as well as the reflections will throw off mocha’s tracking engine. As Gardner has advised, try tracking just the edge of the glass. Add additional tracking points on the fingers to see if this helps with the tracking results.

If the above do not help, then keep the background textures simple. Use either a chroma card that the talent holds, as a mock up for the glass OR use the glass but with a chroma card in the middle to act as a tracking marker – these steps will make tracking a lot easier.

You can simply duplicate the effect and offset the keyframes in time. Alternatively, use Hold keyframes on the effect’s position prop to create the looping structure.

February 27, 2014 at 3:08 pm in reply to: Mocha Adjust Track Module problems

Hi Gardner, based on your post, I don’t see where you’ve followed my instructions in this thread – https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/2/1046602#1048423.

You seem to have missed the part in step (2) where you create the second keyframe in the Adjust Track module.

The Adjust Track module does what it says – it adjusts the ‘original’ tracking data. Once you’ve anchored the timespan where drifting occurs, with the TWO keyframes, you will not experience the issue you’ve described. Without this anchoring keyframing strategy, you will inadvertently adjust the ‘original’ keyframes, over a timespan, that had provided you with a solid track.

Of course, there is very much a need to create additional keyframes within the anchored timespan. You seem to have the keyframing strategy for this part sorted out.

  • [Simon Huang] “But, how do you differentiate one plane from the another?”

Your question is incredibly basic – it is something you should know prior to tracking with mocha. You were provided with a couple of URLs to help you in this area. Please do the neccesary.

[Dan Carr] “Is there a way to have both comps update live as I drag “Element X”?”

Nope! The active comp will always be rendered first, then the second comp – the lag you experience is something you have to live with. You may want to look at soloing only pertinent layers when working with such a Workspace.

  • You should track just the horizon – a single plane. Your tracking spline covers two different planes; the horizon and the water.

Track again in mocha but restrict your tracking spline to the edge of the water and include some of the cloud/sky area.

I suggest that you watch the following tutorials as you seem to not understand what planar entails –

Start here – https://www.imagineersystems.com/videos/steve-wright-planar-tracking/view. Then look for the other tutorials in the “Learn mocha” series which were authored by Steve Wright.

Then reinforce what you’ve learned with these other tutorials –

I’m also surprised that you’ve successfully linked to another object. There’s obviously some difference between these two objects that you’ve not shared.

February 26, 2014 at 3:49 pm in reply to: Select vertex point in shape layer/mask

    Two ways –
    1) Select the Shape Layer’s Path property in the Timeline
    2) With the Selection Tool selected, select the Shape Layer either in the Timeline or the Comp Panel, then hit CTRL and mousedown on the layer. Release CTRL and click on a vertex to select it.

  • Check your Fast Preview setting – this could be due to Draft preview. If this still doesn’t sort out your issue then your best bet is to post your AEP for someone to take a look.

February 26, 2014 at 1:51 am in reply to: After Effects 3D shape positioning??

Another useful shortcut key is CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+\ – Look at Selected Layers (found in the View menu. This works well when you’ve placed a 3D layer in its place and want your camera re-positioned to view the layer, centered in the Comp Panel.

With CTRL+HOME, you move the selected layer(s) to the Comp Center, probably after you’ve moved/animated your camera. With CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+\, you move/animate the camera instead of the selected layer(s).
