I would render out a short segment of the 3D stuff with varying compression settings for MPEG-2 output. One of these should be close enough to what you’re trying to match. I would start at 5Mbits and work downwards to 1.5Mbits.

I’ve not worked with HDV but I do know that HDV is 1440×720 with a PAR of 1.33. On occasions like these, it’s best to work with a single image with a perfect circle from the start of the pipeline and on to tape, for final delivery. If the circle looks perfect from the start and at the end then all systems are in sync.

Can be done. Just be creative with the way you draw your walls. The trick is in knowing that your wall is maade by a single mask. What that mask shape looks like is off course up to you. It can be as elaborate as you need it to be – again, be creative with your thoughts and you should be able to come up with solution.

For non-square output I have a preference for working in square pixel comps throughout except for the finl step before rendering. It is only then that I nest my square-pixel comp into the required non-square equivalent.
Take note that not all plugins are non-square savvy – another reason to always work in square pixel comps.

You’re comparing apples versus oranges. For MPEG-2, AE does a good job when compared to other tools. If it’s 8Mbits for an MPEG-2 file, then the file sizes shouldn’t be different between what AE delivers and the other tools. And less visual difference when you’re doing CBR. I’d stay away from VBR MPEG-2 files unless disc space is going to be an issue.
For Web delivery, AE will be far behind other compression-only-tools.

Actually, MPEG-1 files are part of the DVD specs – just that no one uses it as there is a strong preference for MPEG-2.
It’s sad that you’re a student asking questions that are integral to digital media content – stuff like these should have been taught. I cover compression and video architectures in all my AE classes. Like I said, they’re integral.
AE’s MPEG-2 output is pretty good. A bitrate setting of 8Mbits for video is pretty awesome.

The issue has to do with AE’s render pipeline (rendering order). In a normal state, masks are rendered first, followed by effects and then transforms.
In your case, masking before the text effect essentially does nothing other thn masking on an empty solid which is then affected by the effect. In short, what you need to do is to have the text applied first, in one comp, and then apply the mask, in another comp. The nesting procedure ‘forces’ AE to process the text effect first and then the mask.
TIme to upgrade your AE skills by reading a book or two.

In the Interpret Footage dialog (Project Panel), set the seqence to loop to 2. If you’ve already dropped the footage into your tmieline, ten set your timeline’s duration to the required duration.

Sounds like a case of chroma crawl. Try reducing the opacity for te text to about 80%. DO a test on a short segment of your original video.

I’d use Shatter. Create your bullet hole using a small layer and then apply Cell Pattern, tweak to taste to get some roundish-looking spot(s). Then apply Roughen Edges. Use the result as a Custom Shatter Map.
In Shatter, use a gradient to time the appearance of the bullet hole(s).
