Masking Numbers Effect
I made a countdown but I ran into a problem of not being able to mask out a portion(the hours) of the time. Is there any reason for this or is it just not possible to do (though the tutorial said it is)? Thanks for any help.

No masking required if you use this clock, just look at the bottom of the page to see how to drop the hours by deleting the “padZero(hr) + “:” +” in the last line of Dan’s expression:

And you probably want to delete the “+ padZero(sec) + “.” + ms
” in the lawst line to drop the milliseconds. -
The issue has to do with AE’s render pipeline (rendering order). In a normal state, masks are rendered first, followed by effects and then transforms.
In your case, masking before the text effect essentially does nothing other thn masking on an empty solid which is then affected by the effect. In short, what you need to do is to have the text applied first, in one comp, and then apply the mask, in another comp. The nesting procedure ‘forces’ AE to process the text effect first and then the mask.
