Sounds like a memory-related issue. Lots to test out here –
    1) Remove one of the Zaxwerks layers to see if that helps – you may have to render each separately (a pre-render for each one)
    2) If your lights and camera are animating, ensure that they don’t share the same position at any point in time – never heard of this happening or causing an issue but I’d still look into it – deperate situation calls for desperate action.
    3) Reduce the size of your comp
    4) Transfer the project onto another machine – or maybe even put a copy here for someone else to have a look-see

With Shatter, you can change the Repetition parameter and get more or less pieces easily – great if you need to set up lots of puzzles with different sized/number of pieces. Use a gradient map to selectively choose which pieces get shattered through sequentially. Time Remap accordingly (if required) to have better control over the motion of the pieces.

Ensure that you ahve the latest version of Zaxwerks that’s compatible with AE7. If that’s alright then switch off OpenGL in the AE’s preferences/preview/display settings. And if that’s not doing it too then look into your OS settings and switch off hardware acceleration.

[mbevilacqua] “Sounds bit like “Be water my friend” 🙂
That would imply that you can draw 3D masks right?

I thought that was not possible… I’ll try!”

Duh!?! No. That wasn’t what I was implying. 3D Masks is out of the equation. I can’t give you a definitive way to do what you need because I can’t read your mind to understand exactly what you need.

If I can take a stab at it, then I’ll say you should draw a big, hard-cornered “U” as a mask shape – it doesn’t have to be a closed mask shape. And it can be an animated mask shape and it can be a single, yet complex mask shape.

[beenyweenies] “I should also note that in a recent interview one of Adobe’s own product guys conceded that AE’s compressed output was not up to snuff.”

If that’s the case, then rendering to ALL compressed formats from AE should be objected to. That is obviously not what this Adobe guy meant. Hence, that is not what we shold be regurgitating.

Not having listened to the original discourse, I would nonetheless suss it out that the topic in question, then, was compressing movies for the Web and not compression in general, which includes the Animation CODEC, Motion JPEGs, etc. Having said that, WMV output from AE is pretty acceptable. No 2-pass VBR and fancy filters but it does a good job for client previews over the Web – good-sized file and pretty good quality.

FWIW, DVD Studio Pro used to have very poor MPEG-2 encoding. It’s gotten better. I kinda like the MPEG-2 encoding in AE7. It does CBR rather well at the 7-8Mbit range. If you’re looking for VBR MPEG-2 solutions then AE will not be a suitable tool.

Best to check it out with the folks at the COW’s Compression Forum. They love this kinda stuff.

    Dude! You’ve indeed progressed.

Try the Shift key down during AE’s initialising stage – keep the key down all the way through. That’ll keep the plugins from loading – I believe that encasing the folder name in the OS with square brackets does the same thing. Hopefully it’s plugin related and not some issue entrenched within the AEP itself.

  • Me thinks a hyperlink on the Adobe After Effects text would be better. Not as obvious as it should be but better than the multiple clicks.

Not a good thing when a forum leader gets lost in their own playground. 😉

Better yet, a simple graphic link placed next to the Forum Title.

Mark Simpson, a great guy and former AE Forum Leader had a tutorial that created a tree growing. He used Advanced Lightning. The results are pretty close to what you want. I suggest you take a look at that ASAP. The only problem is, “whatever happened to the link to the AE tutorials???”

Anybody knows how to get to the AE tutorials section?
