Hi Ted … well I was browsing the ‘effects’ in the new 5.5 and was surprised to see the old favourite ‘Basic 3d’ which has served me well over the years for a down-n-dirty bit of perspective and thought I’d give it a go for old time’s sake ! … Roger

Hi Wes … how’s the new system going, I have a similar requirement, quite lightweight after effects use and am debating between iMac 27-inch 3.1GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 and Mac pro (but I need the new mac soon and don’t really have the funds for the Mac Pro) – thanks if you can help. Roger

Good point Ted and thanks for the link Walter those figures are quite frightening … good of you both and food for thought … even ‘used’ though plus a monitor the pro starts to push the budget, still that’s my problem, maybe I’ll have to struggle along with my old iMac until I make a little more freelance money in order to buy a Mac pro.

Thanks for the tips chaps, yes I see some expense coming up, my small amount of After Effects work these days doesn’t justify a big hardware spend but I’m thinking of upgrading my elderly iMac with one of the newer iMac i7s I think it can take 16gb ram so hopefully that will keep AE5 fairly happy.

Thanks Walter, yes the discount offer was an added temptation as well as the client’s request.

So no problems keeping an old version of AE on the system for using old plugins ?

Thanks Erik … looks like that may well be it, the footage is lo-res H264 .mov that I’ve been sent, it’s ptc, green screen, and it’s for me to sue as a guide, I stick the information behind the presenter and send back the Hi-def ‘project’, they then ‘replace’ the lo-res and render. I don’t really need to render but I do need to review the project for timing etc and doing a ram preview is painfully slow (I don’t have a very powerful Mac) … converting 20 bits of footage will be a pain but yes I can do that … any recommendations codec wise please ? or is there something I can do during the render process which will achieve the same (given that said render is only for my own use) … thank you so much for easing the pain.
