to paint you need to open the video in the layer window by clicking on the video twice.
for any tool or feature you want to know more about, just type its name in the upper right search field in your Ae interface.here are resources for using the paint tool in Ae:

haven’t tried this technique. interesting ☺ though I would just prefer to import as footage instead of creating additional layers that are not needed (yet).
I tested this in Ae 2018 and AI 2018. it seems that if you import a blank layer and update it, the update will occur in the project panel footage and not the timeline (although it’s the same layer). this also happens in CC2017 Ai/Ae and also in CC2015.3 Ai/Ae and at this point I stopped and wondered if this ever worked? it seems that this method does not work.

another way other than holding alt as you place the new source footage over the old, is to highlight both the new source (from the project panel) and the soon to be old source (in the timeline panel) and pressing Ctrl+Alt+/ (on Windows)

December 11, 2017 at 10:54 pm in reply to: What is the Best Way To Animate a Car on a race track ? Bezier Keyframes or some other better method ?I see the problem. this is complicated and to add to that your track is also not flat so even if you do rotate the path in 3d, you have to adjust the height of certain vertices manually. the method is the same I showed you and you do need to scale it up, set your car coordinates in element to the default so it will be centered, then create the null, parent that null to the moving null.
I got this far:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mytzMJZ5xSec-1Z3XWCpb8ojlV8JN4NB/view?usp=drivesdkyou should probably do this whole thing in a real 3d software.

you create the path on a 2d solid.
paste the path to a position of a 2d null
set the 2d null to 3d null
link the 3d null to another 3d null
rotate the parent null -90 degrees on Xif you need to scale the path then scale it using the parent null.

December 10, 2017 at 10:57 pm in reply to: Illustrator artboard cut when importing in AE[Maxim Tincu] “I really want to know how to make my artboards not cut in AE. Thanks”
no need a special tutorial for this, simply look at the Ae resource page for preparing your artwork:
https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/using/preparing-importing-still-images.html
“Create your document in Illustrator using one of the Video And Film document profiles. In addition to creating a document at the appropriate size for video or film work, this creates a document with two artboards: one at the appropriate frame size, and one much larger. When you bring such a document into After Effects, the area outside the smaller artboard isn’t cropped and lost; it’s retained outside of the composition frame. This only works for an Illustrator document with multiple layers imported as a composition.”
so the answer is very simple. create another artboard that is bigger than the original one and contains all the art. in Ae it won’t be cut. just make sure the artboard size and reference points are whole numbers to avoid ant-ailiasing issues (the HD preset will do that, you need to change it manually).

December 10, 2017 at 3:06 pm in reply to: What is the Best Way To Animate a Car on a race track ? Bezier Keyframes or some other better method ?you paste the keyframes to a 3d null, then you parent the null to another 3d null and you rotate the parent -90 degrees on the X rotation. then you delete the parent. now you have a runway on the floor plane.

December 10, 2017 at 8:57 am in reply to: What is the Best Way To Animate a Car on a race track ? Bezier Keyframes or some other better method ?1. Add a solid layer
2. Toggle its visibility off
3. Draw a path with the pen tool that will be your motion path for the movement (the runway)
4. Copy the mask path property (important: highlight the mask path, not just the mask)
5. Paste to whatever position property you want and the path vertices will convert to position keyframes lasting 2 seconds that rove across time. Stretch to fit by dragging the last keyframe.Roei Tzoref
