  • Yes, the latest versions of DispCalGUI have an option to export 3D LUTs. I have used it for calibrating my monitors (I load the LUT on the DeckLink cards).

I don’t remember exactly how I got it to work, the “lut export” has many options and I remember being hours testing different methods until I got the right LUT (checking both visually and looking at the curves).

One thing I remember is this:
When loading the LUT in the HDLink Utility or the DeckLink config, check the “3D Red output” tab (and green and blue). Each one should have a curve only on its own channel, and the others must be unmodified. If when you load a LUT you see that the other channels are not flat, make sure you understand what it is doing and if it is right.

    This is the “clean” way:

This is not right (in my case, it destroyed the colors in the blacks):

The way to avoid this is to fiddle with the export settings in DispCalGUI 🙂 but as I said before, I don’t remember the exact way.

  • Thanks Dave but that is not the case.

The offset I have in each shot is the same as the duration between the start of the recording and the slate, this is specifically related to some process editors do during syncing sound.

The problem is that FCP doesn’t see the clips from the beginning (when I go to the first frame of a clip in FCP it’s always the slate when it just closed).

Actually the real problem is that Resolve doesn’t read the XML the way it should. It seems that it measures cuts based on an incorrect start timecode (now defined by the editor on the slate frame).

I’ll post again if I find any solution to this.

Weird, I’ll try to find a fix then!

The SwiftKey Android keyboard used a system from uservoice.com, each user (appart from posting ideas) has a limited amount of “stars” to use for backing ideas.

    In the meantime:

    – +1 for resizable scopes.
    – Plus, I would also like the “zoom” in the vectorscope again.

    – Copy paste nodes. In V9 I cannot copy paste nodes anymore. It is much easier than still – open node graph – etc when you need it only once or twice.

    – Unlimited window shapes per node. Let’s say I have to mask 2 eyes using 2 circular windows, to make the same correction on both, I need 2 nodes and an alpha link. I believe every node should have as much windows as we need, and we choose the type for each one.

    – Version #/#: Lots of times I would have clips with more than 5 versions (mostly in documentaries with 2 moving cameras) and I would use the total # of versions displayed in the thumbnail to identify each camera (I’d recognize the shot by knowing it’s the one with 6 or 10 versions). Now I have to right click a shot to see if it’s the one with 6 or 10 versions.

    – Batch Render: I don’t like that I need to delete a batch render job if I don’t want it to render now. I liked the fact that I could “send” the jobs I wanted for render and keep the others for later or whatever.

    – Linked clips icon is now more difficult to see if you are searching for the other cuts linked to the one you are seeing. A bigger and more saturated icon would be good.
    – Filter should allow to see only the linked clips.
    – Linked clips icon only appear on the selected cut when there are linked clips in the same track. If I have the same file in many cuts in track 1 and one cut of that same file in track 2 (all linked) and I am seeing the one in track 2, I don’t see the red marker on it, I only see it on the other clips.

    – What’s the use of limiting the LUT export location to the DaVinci LUTs folder??

    – Tangent Wave input sizing and window sizing knobs are too sensitive.

    – Color markers should be seen from the Color page. When I want to mark a clip for further view, I need to use a marker because a flag marks the entire file with its linked clips, not only that cut or version. But then I only see the it from the Conform page, so I need to use the filter to identify the marked clip. OR:
    – Flags should be only for a single edit or at least an entire version, so if I need to mark a clip I only mark that one and not all the linked clips.

    – I prefer the thumbnail tabs instead of the list.

    – Keyboard layout configurations is not working for me. V9 layout is annoying.

    – Info window on the right of the timeline in the Color page should be resizable, codecs and filenames do not fit.

Hope you agree with me 😛

February 19, 2012 at 12:59 am in reply to: Davinci Resolve needs two graphics cards.

In my experience, I tried a Hackintosh (OSX) with a GTX480 alone, or GTX480 + GT220, and the latest setup was unstable. I did the same test later with Windows 7 and both setups had the same performance.

Maybe there is some setting I forgot, it wasn’t a thorough test, but in my experience it’s better to keep it simple if you’re not following the guide.

  • Thank you Jaime,
I guess that’s the solution… looks pretty simple.

    Thanks,

  • I work at a post house in Argentina where we have an Iridas SpeedGrade license and are worried about the market perception of it now that Adobe bought Iridas, we don’t know what they plan to do with it.
We bought the DaVinci license less than a month ago thinking of it as a stronger color correction tool that might have some good “market perception” in the future (currently Assimilate Scratch has the lead in Argentinian’s concept of powerful color grading).
I agree with you, and I hope the industry starts to be less “price-oriented”, and also that BMD keeps improving the software as they have been doing since they bought it.

Thanks for all the answers and sorry for the delay. I was away from home and will be busy these days too.

I restored from the backup and did a cleaner 10.6.8 upgrade. It behaved better (but no NR yet) for the first minutes but then showed the GPU error again.

[Blase Theodore] “Are you using the ApplegraphicsPowerManagement.kext? It was probably re-installed with the update. try removing it.”
I didn’t remove it but I got good performance with other software using the graphics card and benchmarks.

[Blase Theodore] “I assume you’re booting with the non-480 card as the primary display?”
I only have the GTX480. No dual graphics card. Do you think this could be the issue? This was the same setup for V7 and I haven’t seen those errors before.

[Blase Theodore] “Also are you definitely getting OpenCl accelleration? (Is your top menu bar translucent?)”
I am definitely getting OpenCL and CUDA, already ran benchmarks.

[Blase Theodore] “How are you initializing the cards? EFI? enabler kext? (If so which one?) I’d switch to an EFI string in your boot.plist.”
Not using EFI string nor any special kext. Using GraphicsEnabler on com.apple.boot.plist (that’s EFI, right?).

We are going with the Hackintosh first and then get a decent MacPro in the future, but we’re still deciding other things.

    Thanks,
    Rodrigo

When I enable the DeckLink SDI my playback is clearly slowed down. I’m only doing test projects with clients who don’t care about playback speeds so I can work with it.
With 10.6.8 + V8 it flashes during playback, that’s really something I couldn’t do with for grading, but I’m not sure if the issue is related to the DeckLink SDI or to my GPU.
Also, it adds a general unstability to the system, it crashes often during playback (Resolve freezes, need to force close it). But again, this is a completely-away-from-recommended-specs system. I don’t know how it’d work in a MacPro with all the other required components.
I don’t know about the Intensity. At work we have a Multibridge. I installed Resolve there and noticed a lack of contrast in the image.

Hi Rohit. The dongle is plugged in, when I unplug it Resolve shows the license error when starting.
I tried plugging it to another port, but this doesn’t change anything.
The dongle still works OK with the previous version (I’m actually trying 10.6.8 + v8 in another hard drive, the main drive still boots 10.6.5 and V7 with no problems).

    Thanks,
    Rodrigo.
