The Panasonic color finder is outstanding, and the LCOS display is unbeatable. Color reproduction and sharpness excellent. It gives you a highly accurate look, much as an expensive monitor, which gives me lots of confidence when moving quickly.

I have a Varicam and an HPX 3000, and as I intercut their material I am struck by how very good the Varicam (F) looks.
The P2 system is great, but we still lack a pure data input process that looks as good as HDSDI. Perhaps AVID and Apple will have solved this by NAB, but a for now scene to scene test shows the noise and resolution difference very clearly.

The camera is definitely clean — meaning no noise. Video look is up to you in whatever setup you choose. Shooting at 24P with one of the film like gamma selections gives a very pleasing look that has nothing in common with digi beta.
I haven’t seen the new Varicam, but I have nothing but good to say about the 3000.

Don’t know what you mean by “videoie”. What frame rate are you shooting at?
I have had a 3000 for a year (and also own a Varicam) and feel it has the best picture of any camcorder I have seen. If there is noise in a well exposed image, it has escaped me. I own several high end monitors.
The new Varicam will not shoot variable frame rate in 1080P, so these are separate discussions. AVC-I is undoubtedly a superior codec to DVCPRO HD.

Refer to the operating manual. The procedure is simple and straightforward, and the directions clear.
To make things even easier, Panasonic has software that will checks all your P2 gear to make sure each firmware version is the latest and correct. I don’t know any other camera manufacturer who makes it any easier.

When I bought my Varicam Rich Abel designed an A&J case that holds the camera body, a small monitor and some accessories. The case also has wheels and a pullout handle. As I do not like to ship the camera w. lens attached, it works fine for me, and now I use it for my 3000. I hand carry the lens in a small pelican-style case. While the case isn’t small — it is smaller than the Thermodyne, it is robust enough to survive the current airline handling. You cannot contact Abel Cine as I’m sure they have the model #.

I purchased the Panasonic stereo mic which they pair with the camera. It is excellent, reflecting a substantial improvement of nearly all of the practical aspects of the camera. I’m sure there are other mics that would sound good, but this has the advantage of quality plus a good fit.

I use an Aaton left grip with the Chroiszel rosette attached to the camera with a Vocas zoom motor on the right handle. It balances nicely.

There is a dipswitch inside the audio board that allows you to change the impedance for each input. This will have a great impact on the range. Not terribly difficult to do, but easy for a tech.
