November 13, 2009 at 4:54 pm in reply to: 3D Warp HQ not seeming to work after upgrade

    OK,I have a minute;I’ll post again.
Here’s my situation:we recently upgraded from Symphony Nitris to Nitris DX. Using WinXP and Interplay now, rather than the buggy Media manager.
Anyway,we noticed right off the bat that the 3D warp effects we often used were degrading pix quality (in SD work, but not 1080i HD work)upon resizing picture and titles smaller, or simply upon repositioning.
An on-site avid expert informed us that now 3D warp effects are coded differently than they used to be. We then decided to use Avid Express 3D Picture in Picture (PIP);he informed us that the code with PIP is different than with 3D warp.
Same paramaters completely as 3D warp, though, and familiar,so when we recreated our standard 3D warp effects…no more pix degradation.
FYI: 3D warp looks fine and operates the same in HD;but it’s the SD where it has changed for the worse. Bad code perhaps.
Anyway,I don’t know if this helps you or not,but just the same…

I responded to this message, but for some reason it was flagged for a “word”.
Since I posted no intentional cursewords, I’m hoping it was just a formality and perhaps I mistyped something. Anyway, hope you get my response.

We recently upgraded from Nitris Classic and media Manager to Nitris DX (still Win Xp) and Interplay.
Noticed right off the bat that 3D Warp degrades the quality of the media when resizing pix down. We were told by an on-site Avid specialist that,HQ,polyphasing etc aside, now 3D warp effects are processed differently than pre-DX or in classic Nitris (I’m paraphrasing here).
Since Avid Express 3D effects are processed through a different code than 3D Warp DVE efxs are,we decided to re-do our standard 3D warp efx with Express 3D PIP. Same paramaters and everything, but no pix quality loss upon resizing, etc.
I”m not sure if this helps, but just the same…

October 25, 2009 at 7:10 pm in reply to: BUG(?) when outputting in Nitris DX:PLEASE HELP!!!

By the way,Terry,I saw an email-bounced that you sent to me at work;thanks.
Unfortunately, due to our ever-paranoid IT department, the message never went through. I venture you said to me in the email what you posted here.Anyway….
Yep,my dir. post (the boss)is somewhat (understandably) miffed that I didnt catch this “full-render” issue when I as testing the DX. I tested everything BUT longform output. My bad.
I certainly would have suggested something ELSE …ora t least brought this up…considering the longform we do. BUt we were still stuck with an OLD ISIS due to our version of Nitris. So we HAD to upgrade if we were going to go with Interplay and newer Isis.
Bob Russo from Avid made me more comfy with the “Full render” issue. …he said as long as we have “stop on drop frame” in dig cut checked,we’ll be ok,and we can UNCHECK “videofect safe mode” in dig cut.
Apparently,DX is a hardware-renderer, as opposed to classic Nitris’ software-renderer. We are using HP8600s with Win XP w/ our DXs. Bob noted that a quicker PC and VIsta 64 would not require almost-full rendering. Makes sense, but this was my first time investigating system intallations and it didn’t occur to me.We’re going with what we have…the 8600s,Win XP,Nitris DX,isis and interplay.
The thought of spending 2 1/2 hours rendering a longform seq.(that has gfx layers, resizing, and, say, a color limiter on top)freaked me out when i saw it. BY then it was too late…DX systems are actually being installed today as I write this, and I’m about to test all our rooms so they’re good to go tomorrow. No more classic nitris. You live and learn!
Thanks again, for your huge knowledge base. I’d venture to guess you’ve helped hundreds of editors just from this site alone, not to mention the Avid site. And you’re one of the few non-Avid officials on the Avid forums who actually even bothers to respond to queries!

One more question, pertaining to this original question that I aksed:
    <>

You mention this is “done in Avid”,which makes sense. Yet,the Avid rep for Interplay that visited us mentioned that we should never again “file open bin” from another project while in a current project. It seems to me,then, that one cannot locate and/or take media (sequences or otherwise) from another project’s bin within Avid itself, and must therefore only use Interplay for this task. Is this true,in your opinion, as an INterplay user? Thanks again.I have a meeting tomorrow morning; a Q/A with our other editors, and this is a very hot topic.

June 19, 2009 at 5:41 pm in reply to: edit-in flashes using HD-SR deck as HD-23.976

Interesting..thanks. Someone on an Avid NG suggested having engineering check our tri level sync generator.
As far as as our HDSR deck is concerned (we use a Sony 5500 SRW and also a SONy 5000 SRW), when I output to these decks in straight HD 1980i,I can edit all day and have few insert editing problems…I’ve just found HDCAm decks completely stable when outputting 23.976HD. HDSR decks seem to freak out a bit.
We haven’t gotten our engineering dept. into the loop yet,but we will.
Our problem is that we will very soon HAVE to output to HDSR,in 1080i HD,23.976 HD as well as 720p HD. All using the same deck. SO we HAVE to find out why insert edits aren’t working.
I’m surprised more people haven’t had this problem. Here, you’re the first to respond.

Thanks so much Terrence. Now I know for certain we will be importing our 24p gfx at 175x….
