For the first time, beginning tomorrow,my facility (with 6 Avid rooms)is beginning the switch from Media Manager to Interplay;to a newer Isis version; and from Symphony Nitris to NItris DX.
I’m the Senior editor at our facility; we will also have a media coordinator functioning as the defacto Adminisitrator for INterplay.

I’ve read over the Interplay PDF (it’s huge), and have a few questions for the experts before I dive in tomorrow:

-You’ve digitized incorrect media and want to delete it: how? Through Interplay only now, or can you still delete it from the avid bin it was captured into?

-Each time you edit in an Avid project, do we have to add files or folders (that is,once new bins are created)through Interplay, or are these bins ,once created, considered “Avid assets”,and automatically put into INterplay ocne an editor creates them?

-How about importing gfx? We’ve always imported our graphics (QTs,keyable gfx, mattes, etc) from a central graphics server in our facility. Do we still import these directly into a (created)project bin or must we import them into interplay now instead, and then transfer them into a project bin? Thus, are these imported files considered file assets or avid assets?

-You want to move a clip or sequence, within Avid, to a different bin in the same project. Is this now still done in Avid, or through interplay only? What if you need to move this clip or sequence into another avid project? We were told not to “file-open bin” from another project anymore.
What about moving duplicate copies of sequences or clips?

-After an editing session, do we editors need to update Interplay each time?

    Thansk for any tips.

[rob ray] “You’ve digitized incorrect media and want to delete it: how? Through Interplay only now, or can you still delete it from the avid bin it was captured into?

I can be deleted from the machine it was captured from.

They automaticy are in interplay… assuming shared drives are where they were captured.

You’ll pull them from an assets folder and can bring to any bin in any project.

Done in Avid. Duplicating and renaming is best, because of multiple users.

-After an editing session, do we editors need to update Interplay each time?”

It’ll update when you close Avid or you can manually update it.

One more question, pertaining to this original question that I aksed:
    <>

You mention this is “done in Avid”,which makes sense. Yet,the Avid rep for Interplay that visited us mentioned that we should never again “file open bin” from another project while in a current project. It seems to me,then, that one cannot locate and/or take media (sequences or otherwise) from another project’s bin within Avid itself, and must therefore only use Interplay for this task. Is this true,in your opinion, as an INterplay user? Thanks again.I have a meeting tomorrow morning; a Q/A with our other editors, and this is a very hot topic.

I’ve been opening bins in other projects very frequently, no problems with that whatsoever. I’ve just been told by our technical support that they’ve not heard about that being a problem. (We’re on Interplay vers 1.5)
If your people confirm that it is a problem, let us know, and if you can find out why it’s a problem it would help us all.

I’ll bring this up to my folks tomorrow and respond back as soon as I have an answer.

The best thing to do is to create bins per project as needed and drag media from your interplay window into those bins. It does not duplicate media… just creates new references. With permissions and such, you can see how easy it would be to create a mess by opening bins from other projects in other rooms. Not a huge no no as long as everyone is on the same page.

Bins that are open in other rooms are automatically locked so you can’t make changes in those, but you can drag and copy sequences from them. That is often very useful, but of course that can also be done from the interplay window.
The way I often use it though is to drag sequences from older projects, even if the material itself has been deleted, and Media Management have deleted all references, to refer to how someone has done a sequence, or particularly the effects applied when a style has to be repeated.
I have a few bins in our shared storage space, where I’ve got lots of groups of effects I find repeatedly useful.
