[Oliver Peters] “This is a niche, of course, so it doesn’t correctly reflect the total numbers.”

Which plays into my previous point. How are obscure, general numbers relevant? We have no clue what level of experience he has (if any), let alone in which area of production. There is and never will be one best solution. Ever. Freelance? Employed? Those and a bazillion other factors play into the (imho futile) “which is best” question, which, again, no one can answer for anyone else.

[John Rofrano] “if you have no need to add 3D objects and such into your videos”

I actually do every so often. In which case I use mObject. It would seem to me that one could put together more or less the same functionality, only for much less. Will be interested to see if this actually gains any mentionable traction. Would admittedly be very surprised if it did, considering the competition. And if it doesn’t in fact open up, then I see little chance, yes.

Still wondering who is actually using this, where and for what. Would love to hear why, too.

October 28, 2014 at 9:42 am in reply to: FCPX vs PPro CC

[martin dugard] “many moved to PPro (or Avid).”

To this day I am waiting for that to be substantiated in any way. Based on nothing but hearsay and anecdotal “evidence” at best imho. There is no factual data that I am familiar with that could back that up. I’m sure some moved here, others there (as they always have btw, depending on their needs) others not at all.

I don’t understand the question or its practical relevance either. In the end, the only person that can in fact tell you if FCP X (or any other NLE) is for you, is… you. There is a 30 day, fully functional trial of every major NLE. Learning the basics and seeing which “clicks” with you only costs you some time. No judgement is better than actual objective judgement. If I were to tell you that FCP or PPro or Avid or Vegas or iMovie was the best NLE on the planet, bar none… how could you possibly know that that is true (for you) either way otherwise?

[martin dugard] “Is the production world still mainly FCP?”

No idea how anyone is going to verify that for you either way. The only question is which NLE is in any way relevant to you in the context of your market and clients. Therefore you’re asking all the wrong questions imho. Any and all NLEs have their strengths and weaknesses. The question isn’t which those are, but which are in any way relevant to you and your work. And I’m guessing no one here knows that other than you.

[martin dugard] “are there any reasons why I should go PPro rather than FCP?”

You tell us. The relevant variables for answering that question one way or the other are massive. I personally favor making decisions based on personal needs and actual experience. I prefer not to have others dictate it to me or rely on (rarely unbiased) personal opinion, other than maybe in the context of my own.

Not sure about the problem, but there are also the ⌘⇧3 and/or ⌘⇧4 shortcuts btw. 😉

But when you say “from FCP10 to 10.3”, do you mean from 10.0?? Or 10.0.8 or .9 or whatever?

October 28, 2014 at 8:36 am in reply to: Copy a Project and referenced media to another drive

[Craig Alan] “Will this approach shrink the size of the library and support files, thus saving storage space?”

If by “support files” you mean render, cache etc. files, then no, of course not. Those you can delete separately as needed. It will simply delete either the actual clip out of the library, if it’s managed, or simply it’s alias that leads to the original, if external.

[Craig Alan] “Also will the unused filter work on unused portions of clips or only whole clips?”

Any unused clip, whole or portion. If any (other) PORTION of a given clip is being used in the active project, then merely its reference in the event is deleted (which can be restored with a match frame if needed).

[Craig Alan] “he says you can’t add markers on an audio only primary storyline. “

No he doesn’t. He says he’d like to place a marker at 1:30, but “unfortunately FCP doesn’t allow for that”. He was alluding to the fact that you can’t place TIMELINE markers as a time reference. Apparently that was a bit to vague. Marking the clip would obviously not make a lot of sense.

October 27, 2014 at 6:20 pm in reply to: Add Keywords to Clips Already in Timeline?

No. You could at best match frame (⇧F) a clip and assign one, but that’s not recursive AFAIK.

[Vincent Simoneau] “I thought Vision Color was the one who made it for LUT Utility?”

Ah, my bad. I assumed you were using Color Grading Central’s utility. https://www.colorgradingcentral.com/lututility

Like I said in the first post, first thing to check is VERSION i.e. if it’s up to date.

I would update to 10.1.3 first and foremost actually. Even though you’re in mid-project. But there were several changes that may well help fix the problem AND it’s noticeably faster. I haven’t heard of any issues with that small of a jump either.

Alternately you could consider applying the LUT elsewhere e.g. in Resolve after you’ve locked picture. But I’d assume it’s an issue with the LUT Utility, yes. Seems most likely. There are also other options for getting the same effect also that may or may not work better. For example https://www.vision-color.com/osiris/
