October 22, 2018 at 5:32 pm in reply to: Update FCPX to 10.4.3 from 10.0.9 – Need a fix ASAP please![Michael Hancock] “To be fair – it would just be a few clicks in any other NLE.”
To be fair… while a few others may or may not have INSTALLED with just a few clicks, after a firmware, an OS, AND an app update all on top of each other, for the first time in over five years? I somehow doubt any would RUN even remotely (as) smoothly right off the bat (or ever do, with or without updates). Assuming they (certain ones in particular) were even “certified” for any or all of the above to begin with. ????

Honestly? Not updating for over five years, meaning skipping nearly TWENTY versions and you expect it work with just a few clicks? Sure, might be a bit more than your average app, but five years without a single update? ????

Well, I’m unfortunately lost then, sorry. I just know that it works just fine here in all three. Compressor, FCP and Motion…
There’s always the Quicktime 7 Player and possibly MPEG Streamclip? Handbrake?

So you’re saying you’re getting the exact same error message from all three? That of course would be very odd. I only know that it’s fine here.
Exporting as a PNG, TGA, PSD or whatever else sequence is not an option?

[Oliver Peters] “[Tom Sefton] “Not only does the MacBook Pro outperform nearly everywhere, fcpx and resolve are sometimes 5-6 times faster than premiere pro.”
I don’t think you can ever do a definitive comparison, because any of these tests are very codec-dependent. “
So you’re saying that PPro is actually FASTER than FCP on the same machine, but only with certain codecs?

[Bret Williams] “I was just going to add that the autosave benefits FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR FAR outweigh any downsides.”
I’d add an additional FAR to that. Since I can’t remember when I let heard “DAMMIT!! It saved all my work before it crashed!” as opposed to “DAMMIT! I just lost HOURS of work due to a crash!” which you hear constantly. I recommend not trying to make software adapt to you (which is never going to happen to any major degree anyway), but rather simply adapt to the software. With snapshots and smart collections you not only have exactly what you need, but much much more beyond that that you will not find anywhere else. There is absolutely no need for folders (beyond the ones that already exist) if you’re “holding it right”. ????
[Bret Williams] “it auto-backups every 15 minutes so you can always press undo for up to 15 minutes.”
Both right and wrong. The backups are generated (roughly) every 15 minutes, then actually eventually consolidated into daily backups. But backups have nothing to do with your ability to UNDO. You can undo all the way back to the moment you last started FCP (with some exceptions). So if you haven’t quit out of FCP in a week, then you can undo all the way to day one if you wanted.
[Bret Williams] “I think sometimes it has to do with the playhead/selection.”
Yes, that’s what it will be 9 out of 10 times. Zoomed into one section of the timeline using the skimmer, with the playhead somewhere else.

Is there any particular reason why you need to be doing this via Compressor? Does it not work using FCP?

[Joe Marler] “The point is Premiere has generally caught up to FCPX’s H.264 encoding performance… “
Again, an area of little concern to me personally. My work consists of 95% of everything else you mentioned in addition to other things where the best possible performance is the key to avoid ulcers. But thanks for the numbers and background nonetheless.
[Joe Marler] “Similarly, Resolve performance has vastly improved. Apple cannot stand still on either performance or features, but they cannot sacrifice stability. It is difficult to achieve all three of those.”
Sure, both are making serious strides forward. No question about that. But then the last seven years have proven that Apple/FCP are clearly NOT “standing still” by any means. Aside from the fact that BOTH are and will always be TRACK based, which has become a complete no-go for many. Certainly for me. And I have yet to meet anyone that has both worked with and understood the trackless timeline that thought going back would actually pose any sort of workflow advantage rather than huge disadvantages in comparison. So there’s that. Simply shaving a few seconds off of an MPEG encode doesn’t exactly move the needle enough to even be noticed and, in the bigger picture, little more than a bandaid on a gaping wound imho.
And yes, as you say, you cannot sacrifice stability. Especially if it’s just for the sake of yet another quickly tacked on feature that is only relevant or for the appeasement of a minuscule but vocal amount of users, which Adobe is become quite infamous for (and BMD more and more as well from what I’m hearing), especially in the context of PPro. Fortunately not something that Apple is in the business of doing, whether that means having to look to 3rd parties for certain specialty features irking some or not.

Ah. So you were literally talking about H.264/5 only. I took the “performance lead has now evaporated” to imply in general, not exclusively in such an isolated task. My bad. The performance lead in general certainly hasn’t “evaporated”. Far from it.
I can’t speak to either codec, since I have near nothing to do with them other than maybe an occasional ingest from elsewhere, nor have I explicitly tested them recently. So not a yardstick that is in anyway relevant to me personally. But again, the video above comes to a very different conclusion, as does this article/video: https://bit.ly/2MkTS5C … though, granted, the version of Premiere is not mentioned (nor that of FCP) in the latter, so it could potentially be the pre-update version. But it is from yesterday…
