    Thanks Jeff.

The HD was the stock standard one that ships with the Dual G5 PPC.
I think for Asia Pacific the Macs are shipped out of Singapore…

Using Compressor seems like a massive time-consuming workaround when I can encode directly out of Premiere. Mind you, I guess there is the droplet option…

    Thanks Simon.

Yes I backed MOST of the files up barring the one I need. Typical!

I stopped the optimisation process quite early in the process altho it had been running for 12 hours with little progress on the progress bar.

I had tried booting from a system cd as well as connecting through a network from my other Mac. That way I can see my user directory but no shared folders inside it.

So essentially the files are on the HD but the main startup disk can’t be seen usually the StartUp from system Preferences.

If I rebuild the catalog file with Discutil will I lose everything off the HD?

  • I got that message too a few times. Usually happened when my hard drive got full.

I recommend you buy TechTool Pro. It creates an emergency boot partition and has tools for optimising your drives as well as checking memory etc…

    For the Mac use Handbrake.

FFMpeg is great for multiple format conversion.

  • For exposure levels use Levels to balance out the tonal contrast.
And for scratches/dust use Compound blur (just play with the blur amount – just enough to ‘sticth’ the scratch)

Save settings as favourites and apply to all your footage.

Thanks for your speedy reply. I must admit my question was broader than the subject line!
Your answer may be just what I need. I am cleaning some old 1930s movie serials (Tarzan, Dick Tracy etc) and the voices are a bit fuzzy.
