I was thinking of upgrading my GPU since that was the last thing I haven’t tried…

It does this same thing on my older Sierra Lappy… but that GPU is no better than whatever came with the 5,1 from Apple when new…

I wonder what the best card would be for these older 5,1 Macs – like the last card it would run and not sound like a jet engine 🙂

I figured out the issue I had – you have can’t change the frame rate etc on a project once it’s populated (which is really stupid) – so you have to create a new project and then choose the preferences you want …

I guess I could just export the Progressive version first and then use Compressor to make me the interlaced version… I wonder which would do it better?

Ideally my work flow would be to shoot everything in 1080 60P but then I’m not only tossing away 1/2 the frames but also interlacing those… I HATE the way 30P looks though… too jerky compared to 60P or even 60i

Guess I need to experiment and see if the effort is worth the trade off… I never go the other way, deinterlacing… I would just assume use the 60i files like I did for years before I was shooting 60 frames.

I knew that DVD export did that, but I wondered if it also interlaced the file on export… that would of course, be too useful 🙂 I wouldn’t use their authoring anyways, but it could be nice for something super quick.

    Thanks

I have a RAID card from sonnet with 2 SATA drives that are SDD and speed tests are 800+ so fast enough for 4k at least… did the same thing… I can’t go back to Lion or even Mavericks because my Intensity Pro card won’t work and then I can’t see 60P output on my preview monitor…

    I hate that I can’t get this to work…

Yeah, and then I loose 60fps which looks much better with motion. I have no problem with 30fps or 60i it’s 60P where it randomly hangs – so frustrating!

    Hi there,

The problem is that my HDMI card for preview (blackmagic Intensity pro 4K) needs at least HS to be seen.

I do agree with you, it’s sort of like “if it was working perfectly, leave it alone” – lol

I was running Mavericks actually on that machine and everything seemed to run better, but I could only output 1080i from the BM regular intensity card…

does someone make an older card that will output 1080 60P via HDMI so I can preview the finished edits?

    Thanks

  • I figured it out – it’s a bug in their software – you have to go in every time you open the app and then toggle the display settings on the mac. Not sure if it’s just my set up but this is on a New MacBook Pro M1 Max 14 inch… seems more like a ventura issue with regards to PE

Thanks so much for your answer though – was starting to wonder… seems like it really should do that automatic as saved from the last time you used the software… oh well it was $50 🙂

  • If you are shooting shorts and other things that are under 20 mins, you can use a mirrorless or DSLR – there is always an argument about that VS true video or cinema cameras.

Your Budget and types of projects will dictate what you will buy – use good lighting though – don’t buy a $200 light kit and think you will get decent results

I personally am old school – I love some of the new R series canons but Im still a camcorder and cinema fan for longer form stuff for sure – you can always use those for shorter things, but I would never shoot a 2 hr performance with a DSLR esp in 4K, etc… I can’t speak to the New Mirrorless cameras.

I will say for video I think the XA50 is a great camera in low light with it’s 1 inch sensor, and it will do 4K30 at least. – if money is tight, yeah, then one of the newer rebels are good too if these are shorter as I mentioned…

I wouldn’t buy anything older than about 2019 though if you want truly decent low light performance – cameras are so much better in low light than they were even 5 years ago…

I have this Camera and I always use 4 ch LPCM it allows you to have the internal mic as a back up for your wireless or shotgun(s) – I actually love this camera!

There are trade offs with any camera, but for the money, you can’t beat all it can do – it would be a perfect camera if it shot 4k60 and had the nicer LCD screen, but for $2K – it’s a nice camera for sure.

Hi, – yes all transcoded to pro res. I even tried pro res proxy. – is there a “lighter” way to make proxy files then Pro Res Proxy?

the problem happens mostly when Im moving the play head around a lot – it’s like it can’t keep up with what Im doing and just stalls out… I might have 2 or three clips stacked but only showing one clip at a time (100% opaque top layer) – it’s odd

it takes forever and never stops spinning. – when I force quit, the box shows that FCP is not responding… Im assuming that means it’s never gonna?

But I just want a workflow that will work for me. 1080i files are perfect and never have any issues but 29.97 vs 60p and interlaced vs Progressive… just don’t know why it wont work smoothly.

    Thanks

Hi, oh you are correct I forgot to mention what the files were – they were transcoded to ProRes 422 prior to import, using editready.

I guess I just wondered if this is a limitation of it being a 32bit program, but seems like if that was the case, it wouldn’t work at all, and it’s only when I move the playhead lots in the same area to fine tune an edit for example where I get this happening.

Does FCP only allow you to edit all day long in 1080p30? is 1080p60 too much for it to handle? – im not even rendering in 10 bit, just 8 bit.

I never had any issues editing 1080i 59.94 footage, which I know would be the same as 1080p30 (or 29.97)

So, if I had edit ready do proxies and the full ProRes at the same time, I could edit the proxies and then replace them with the better/larger full prores files? I never made proxy files before, but that is my understanding…

I would upgrade but seems like doing multicam editing on either premiere or FCPX seems less easy to do it quickly, etc – guess it’s a matter of learning it.
