Nice! Sounds like an awesome book. Motion has always been able to do what I need it to do (because I’m not really a motion graphics guy), but it has always seemed to be a bit limited. A book on how to cheat in Motion is an awesome idea….perfect for someone who doesn’t want to become so involved with After Effects

You’ll want to export an FCP reference file and bring that into Compressor.
Then drop the “DVD: Best Quality 90 min” settings onto the file in Compressor. There should be 2 settings – an .ac3 for audio and an .m2v for video.
Go through the Encoder pane and Frame controls pain and set everything to “Progressive” and “Best” wherever applicable.
It’s probably not necessary to deinterlace your video though…

Ahh, I forgot to add that if you’re going to do some free work to gain some experience, I wouldn’t do GIANT projects for free. That causes people to think they can get professional work for free…and we can’t have that in this industry, right guys?

I don’t think you really NEED to go back to school, but it does help to have some work under your belt. I hear it all the time – no one necessarily cares about the degree you have or where you got it. They wanna see your work.
While I was in school (the Art Institute of Philadelphia by the way…right down the street from Drexel) I just went to small places and asked them if they needed any video work and said I’d do it for free. One place I went to was the Philly Soft Pretzel Factory. Working for free sometimes turns people off, but I think when you are getting started, it helps a lot because well, who doesn’t need free video. You’ll get some solid experience.
Once you get some samples of work and a reel together, bang on some doors and offer to be an assistant.
That’s my advice. I’m sure the more experienced pros on the COW will have a lot more add.

hahah, I dunno man. Have you been to the east coast? I think I would enjoy 177 degrees in AZ more than 80 degrees with high humidity on the east coast.

By the way, I like your website and reel. I noticed your are from AZ. What is the video industry like out there, if you don’t mind me asking? Moving out west has crossed my mind a few times, and a few friends of mine took a road trip to AZ and had a real good time. So we’ve been thinkin about it. I heard they don’t have good pizza though.

You conform your footage to 24p in Cinema Tools. I don’t think you can do it with 60i though. I think you can only do it with 60p and 30p, but I could be wrong.

Bring your footage into Motion and use the Optical Flow option in the Timing section of the Properties tab in the Inspector

To add on to what you said, Ron, one of my teachers from college has a similar opinion about the Red Cross. He was in the military when he was younger. I forget what country he was based in, but the Red Cross was giving out blankets and stuff to the soldiers. The only catch was that the Red Cross was actually CHARGING the soldiers for those products. Some charity, aye? When he saw that, he also decided he’d never give a dime to the Red Cross either.
