Such a beast doesn’t exist. It’s either a G5 or an Intel. That makes a huge difference with a potential video card. I assume it’s an Intel machine since the X1900 card was not available for the G5.

Try the nVidia 8800GT. I had some problems early but they have since fixed the firmware and OS to work together and it’s working great. They may even have an updated version or new model by now. Not sure.

ATI 4870 is the card of choice according to the experts on the Cow forum for Apple Color.

As I suspected, there are a slew of new models out and no hint of the 8800GT. It is, after all, almost two years old. Here’s a new model that looks promising:

They are different cards than the 8800GT and may have issues but when upgrading hardware, it’s best to do some more research on Apple’s forums to see if there are any major problems with your configuration. Generally, if the hardware is not an Apple OEM, it’s due diligence on your part.

Any graphics card improvement should give all applications better performance. The design of the MacPro relies heavily on the graphics processors handling many of the tasks of the Final Cut suite, as well as other production oriented apps such as After Effects and such.

Will a new card speed up rendering and encoding? No, but it will help in the GUI environment.

Actually a beefy card will speed up rendering as FCP & Motion use FxPlug technology.

I just put a new ATI 4870 in my machine last week. It certainly works much better in Color than my Nvidia 7700GT did. As for FCP or AE – cant really say yet as i haven’t done any heavy video editing since the install.

Pricewise, though, its a no brainer. Mine cost me £200 new.

I’ve got an NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 on my Mac Pro and I have always had trouble with the Mac crashing in Final Cut. I installed a CoreMelt plug in and FC is very unstable. According to the CoreMelt people the crash record says it is something to do with the graphic card.

I wonder if anyone else has the same trouble? My only choice seems to be to take the card out and replace it but I’m loathe buy another until I can confirm that this really is the problem.
