I almost always have my clips on V1 anyway, so all I have to do is use J or L to move the playhead over the clip. Then press X. Then Option A to select the clip (Control A was marking In and Out around my whole timeline)

yes, you’re right. That’s not what I’m looking for though. I want to actually be able to select a clip so I can use the < and > keys to move clips around.

How long is your video? Try doing One Pass CBR at 7.5Mbps. If your video is pretty long, you may have to encode at a lower data rate, but if you have to go lower than 5.5ish Mbps, that may be too low and you’ll be better off with VBR.
Also, have you turned on Frame Controls? Be sure you set the Resize filter to Best.

I don’t think FCE supports DVCPro HD, which I’m sure you figured out by now.
You could convert the clips to Apple Intermediate Codec.

Not that I know of. When I was still in school, we were doing a group project – a talk show in the studio. I tried to rip content from DVDs so guests could talk about them during our “show” but I couldn’t rip ’em. Not with MPEG Streamclip or Handbrake or DVDxDV.

Right, that’s what i meant. But my point was, won’t this lead to software that can get past the copy protection? So the average consumer will now be able to rip a DVD from Blockbuster or Netflix. Not that I personally do that. I’m just saying…

I’m not an audio expert, but I may be able to help.
“When do you normalize in FCP? And how do you do it? How does John do it, the same way? “
I believe the point of normalization is to bring the loudest sound up to a desired level. So if you’re audio is low, and the loudest sound is at -20dB, maybe you want to normalize it to -6dB. You can do this to a large number of clips so that they all peak at the same level.
How to do it? Select the audio clip, Modify > Audio > Apply Normalization Gain

It’s the same concept concept as FCP. You’re raising the audio levels of clips so they all peak at the same level. As for when to do it? It’s the first thing I do. Then I do Compressor/Limiter, noise reduction, high pass and low pass filters, and EQ.
Do you automatically take out certain aspects of audio even before you begin editing, or do you work on audio more after you lock down the rough?
I do audio after I’m done cutting the story together. Picture should be locked before you do audio
Do you use any of the pop, click, or DC offset filters, and if so, how strict are you on those?
I’ve used the pops/clicks filter before. It works Ok. I’ve never used the other ones before though. Not for any particular reason. I just don’t think I ever needed ’em. I’d read the manual and see what they’re for if you’re interested.
