This list contains virtually everything to try to enable:
a. External Monitor VIDEO and AUDIO via FireWire & DV deck or camcorder.
b. Viewing in the Canvas window on the computer screen.
c. Being able to record on the external FW DV deck or camcorder.
d. Being able to capture from a FW device.If working this list doesn’t cure the problem… you may have a serious PROBLEM!
Try things in this order until you find the “cure”:
1. Make sure you have only ONE (1) FireWire deck, camcorder, DV capture “card”, or D-to-A converter or video device attached to the computer at a time. Any more than one DV device can cause loss of signal and control.
2. Make sure you have View (Menu) > External Video> All Frames set.
(If the ALL FRAMES option is grayed-out… jump to step 6 below and continue.)
3. Make SURE your Canvas window (right window) in FCP is set to “Fit to Window”… AND that it has not been “pushed off” the edge of the computer screen.
4. Make sure your CANVAS View Menu (Box Icon with broken sides) is checked on Image or Image+Wireframe… NOT just Wireframe.
5. Make sure your CANVAS View Menu is checked on RGB… NOT just Alpha.
6. Make sure your Final Cut Pro (menu) > Easy Setup… is set for DV-NTSC (or DV-PAL, if that’s where you are).
7. Some camcorders/decks work better under “FW (NTSC/PAL)” -or- “FW (NTSC/PAL) Basic” control (in the capture settings). Try either setting to see which works best for your device.
8. Make sure your Final Cut Pro (menu) > Audio/Video Settings > A/V Devices (tab) > Mirror on Desktop > must be CHECKED. (If not, playing video will not appear in the Canvas.)
9. Make sure the “Log and Capture” Window is CLOSED and not just “hidden” behind other windows.
10. Make sure you have chosen FW output for A/V:
Final Cut Pro (menu) > Audio/Video Settings… >
Video Playback: Apple FireWire NTSC (720 x480)
Audio Playback: FireWire DV
11. Turn off the power to the Camera/Deck/Converter Box, then turn it back ON.
12. Make sure the camera is in VTR mode… or the deck is in DV (DV, iLink, or FW) input.
13. On a Sony camcorder or deck, make sure the menu setting “A/V > DV Out” is set to OFF.
14. Re-check that your FW cable is well-connected at both ends (or try a new cable).
15. Important: Quit FCP, then Restart FCP.
16. Now again, make sure you have View > External Video > ALL FRAMES set…If it still does not work. “Trash” the FCP Preferences on the Mac
“FCP Rescue” is a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences.
It will also restore your user settings afterwards.

[David Roth Weiss] “I would have agreed with you on this until here on the Cow pointed out to me that using a “vertical” Directional Blur would fix the problem, but would only soften the vertical resolution rather the total resolution of the image. This solves the dancing pixels with very little overall defocusing of the image. I tried it and it works a heck of a lot better than a gausian blur.
“I think you made a small TYPO when you posted.
I believe what you meant to say was…“I agree with you up to the point where you suggested using gaussian blur.
I got a tip on the COW that suggested a vertical blur would solve the dancing pixels with less overall defocusing of the image. I have found that works very well. I suggest that you try that instead.”At least I HOPE that is what you meant to say.
Otherwise, I think we should step outside.😉

I have produced many high-quality TV spots with scanned (panned and zoomed) images.

It is ESSENTIAL to monitor the QUALITY of images in FCP that you use an external NTSC (or PAL, if that’s where you are).
The Canvas is NEVER high-quality (by design) and should NOT be used to make determinations of image quality of clips or graphics.I have had high-quality results zooming in by up to 200%-300% using just the “standard” size 720 x 534 (480). (the FCP anti-aliasing is amazing.)
But if I want to make TIGHT zooms, I just double ALL those numbers, and can zoom in at least 500% and “move around” with no “jaggies.”
So if you need to zoom or pan to a greater extent (extra-wide pan-across or extra-tight zoom-in) then scan the images at a much higher number of pixels WIDE and TALL (i.e. Double size 1440 x 1068 or Quad size 2880 x 2136) If you have an “odd shaped” image (very wide or very tall) just make sure you scan it at a large size.You’ll note I have not talked about “DPI” as it is totally unimportant in FCP imports…
just make sure your horizontal and vertical sizes are substantially higher than the minimum (of 740 x 534).Sometimes when panning an image at a certain size, some pixels will “dance”
or exhibit a moire patten… to “filter” this, just apply a tiny amount (1%-2% or less… say .75%) of “Gaussian Blur” filter until the moire disappears. -

You can still use the composite connections in the way I described earlier (just hook the BSP composite out to the camcorder’s composite (yellow) output jack.
Composite will not give you as “clean” a transfer as “S-Vid” or component, but it will certainly work for many applications.
(I don’t know what you’re trying to do.)
But from your posts, it seems that you may not be experienced/comforable enough technically to make the proper connections (especially for audio, which can be a problem due to such big differences in LEVELS from “pro” gear to “non-pro” gear.)
We still don’t KNOW if your camcorder can even PERFORM an input dub.
If its too much hassle, as was suggested, pay someone with the proper gear to make the dub for you.

The “yes” is conditional to IF your camcorder HAS an “input” function.
Some do, many do not.What brand and model do you have?
One way to check is to put the camcorder in “VTR” (playback) mode, but do NOT press “PLAY”.
Connect your BSP’s S-Video cable into the camcorder’s S-Video output (yes, OUTPUT).Play a BSP tape and see if the image pops up on your camcorder’s LCD or viewfinder.
If so, connect the AUDIO from your BSP into the camcorder’s audio outputs (yes, OUTPUTS).If you are a broadcast pro, you can (or can FIND someone who can) get the proper cables and adapters to make that all work.
You’re ready to make your dub by putting the camcorder into “Record” and playing the BSP.Post back if you have more Q’s.

You don’t HAVE to “Print to Video” if you’re having problems.
You need to fully RENDER the timeline.

Slower Render times and less “realtime” than on a faster box.
