I got that idea of shotgun proximity from years of shooting cinema verite with two-person crews, mostly with a Sennheiser and Nagra. At 60 cm I would use a good cardioid mic, not a shotgun. But that’s just me. 60 cm sounds like a set-up shot for closeup or minimal headroom. I would actually try to use a lavalier for a set-up shot with no one moving around.

You had the same problem with a different (Sennheiser) microphone with the same Zoom recorder? Do you have another recording device you can test these mics in? Maybe you’ve identified a problem with the Zoom.

??? I’ve used shotgun mics at 1-2+ meters in many situations for years. That’s what they’re for. Even a good cardioid should give good sound levels at that distance. No idea what your level issue is the the Rode–more familiar with Sennheisers. But the Rode should do better than you report. Careful targeting of shotguns is important, of course. Must “focus” on the mouth of a speaker. I’ve had good results with Sennheiser 416 and Marantz digital recorder at these distances.

I can pan them, no problem. But I want to apply keyframe gain adjustments etc. to both at the same time. They’re already edited in a sequence so I can’t to this in the Project Panel anymore. Apply Effects is slow and clumsy, and I can’t hear the result when I just adjust one of the clips.I’ve tried sending to a submix but this shows no editable waveforms on the timeline. Am I out of luck?

As Dave says, the iphone shoots with a variable frame rate that FCP and others convert to a fixed frame rate but there will be slippage with a separately recorded track.
There are special movie apps you can load into your iphone for more control over video shooting that may produce fixed frame rate. I use one called MoviePro, though haven’t checked out the frame rate effects lately. That might be a solution.
If the iphone is recording sound with picture, I suppose one could import the sound as well as the picture into your NLE and use one of those programs that syncs your separate audio recording to the camera audio track. But this might produce some unwelcome sound anomalies of pitch, tempo, etc.
I think a special iphone movie app will probably be the solution. Needs researching and tests.
