[Scott Francis] “Smooth playback when editing more than one or two tracks”
This one detail has caused me to look at other NLEs but I lose so many other features that I keep coming back to Vegas. Vegas Pro needs to be able to utilize the GPU for more than just rendering a few FX; playback being top of my list.
Another feature I would like to see is an ability to create 3D text and a better way to manage text manipulation. ProType Titler always behaved like a shoddy third-party tool that slowed Vegas to a crawl and was very difficult to work with. The way Premiere handles text is far superior to the three text “plugins” included in Vegas.

July 2, 2014 at 6:01 pm in reply to: RED partners with YouTube for new VP9 codec for 4k videoI have some 4k (compressed) footage from a Sony AX-100. I should upload that and see how it compares when encoded by YouTube.

Check on your video driver to see if there is an update. It may not be the direct reason for the crashes but it is a great place to start.
Also check the state of your GPU acceleration and try to play the clip in the opposite state.

June 10, 2013 at 3:07 pm in reply to: Does the XA-10 get a better image than the Panasonic HMC-150?While I have not used the Panasonic HMC150 I would be inclined to a agree with the B&H sales rep. I’ve used the XA10 and was not impressed when comparing it to the old school SD Canon GL2 or XL1(both 3 CCD camera). The XA10 did not look as sharp nor did it have as rich a color depth to me.
Of course the size of the sensors matter but all else being equal a 3 chip (CMOS or CCD) should perform better than a single chip camera due to the information it can receive.

Have you considered the Blackmagic Cinema Camera or the soon to be released Blackmagic Production Camera?
Another model to consider is the Panasonic AG-AF100A.
I am also in the market for a new camera (sadly with less of a budget than you have) and usually rent a camera to test it out.

One of the great things about Vegas is the ability to handle just about any format you feed it without having to do any pre-conversion.
For a video shoot I work on in the past I had to take video in the MXF format, MOV format and AVCHD format and put it all together. It was just a matter of dragging and dropping the footage to the timeline. Vegas took care of all the rendering to my output format without any issues.

I don’t have direct experience with Canon MXF files but I know that I’ve been able to use Panasonic MXF without any difficulties. Just dropped on the timeline and created videos combined w MOV and MP4 files.

I have found that there is no need to select the audio tracks. The video tracks get moved to complied to one track for you to switch back and forth between camera tracks while the audio tracks remain seperate.
You can mute or edit the audio tracks seperately which allows you to include or exclude individual tracks.——————————-

When it comes to Vegas I’ve found that to be an interesting statement as I have not had the software ever push beyond 4GB of ram no matter the size of my project. I find CPU to be a bigger limiting factor.
At one point this week at had After Effects, Vegas 10 and Photoshop opened at the same time and the biggest offender, by far, was After Effects.
I am not suggesting that it would be unwise to load up on memory, just that I haven’t seen Vegas itself using much.
