hi mike
this is a known issue with HDV 1080 60i (according to Steve Connors, 1080 50i works fine)
This is from Apple’s “late-breaking FCP 5 issues” doc…

HDV Log and Capture Preview Is Disabled When a PCI Graphics Card Is Installed
If your computer has a PCI graphics card installed and you are logging or capturing HDV footage, Final Cut Pro does not preview video or audio in the Log and Capture window. You can still log and capture, but you need to use your HDV camcorder display to preview video.
if you have a PCI graphics card in your G5 (in my case a blackmagic HD Pro) then that kills the display in the log and capture window
the solution is to monitor from the deck or camera as you log, but beware, there is a massive lag between what you see on the camera and what’s being fed to FCP
with that and the sluggish reaction when trying to cue through HDV material, it makes it a pain in the ass in post production – and this is just the logging stage!!
hope this helps
robbie

check the menu to see if the firewire out is set to downconvert instead of HDV out

hhmmmm, then i guess that’s a bonus for PAL land
i’ve had people at apple confirm that this is an issue with 1080i60, and there have been the other posts too on the cow

hi all
just started tinkering with FCP5 and some 1080i60 HDV footage
all seems promising, except for not having any video appear in the log and capture window
now, from a post over in the HDV forum i discovered that this is not a bug!!!!!!!!
