All our stuff has been HDCAM for years. We have a Kona on the MacPro. ProRes 422 looks great even compared to 8 bit and 10 bit.

yeah, there really shouldn’t be a big difference visually between the two. I used to capture HDCAM in 8 or 10 bit uncompressed but don’t bother anymore. For us it’s a decision between HQ or not.
If you’re seeing a big difference in your footage I’d look elsewhere in the chain.Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.

wow, really?
I just read the linked item. It’s over a year old. Does this still hold true because I also exported a h.264 for blue ray without issue. You think this has been updated at all for FCS3? Weird. I’ll try it the other way and see what happens. Thanks.Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.

unfortunately I’ve been dealing with this for years. We have pretty much avoided the issue by creating DVDs. And most of the time use of the subtitle track is what’s used.
For tape we always send a copy out and someone else would process the text to CC and insert it on (what is it line 21?) the videotape for us. So the one tape had the video embedded. But that was before switching to FCS.
Maybe getting the station to accept another format is the easiest solution for everyone.
I have an old encoder in the rack, but that stuff is all analog anyway. There are others out there, but I have no idea if they work going onto a DV tape.you can try these guys:

Yes, the trick is to avoid it in the first place. Note that some eyeglass prescriptions create lenses that are very curved on the front so it’s almost impossible not to catch a light.
But this is all about lighting and learning to deal with stuff. One way is not to try to beat it. Use large softboxes and extremely large diffuse light. You know those softly lit windows that show reflected in some people’s glasses are not? Nope — a large softbox with a “window-alourus*” across the front just creates a false motivation for the reflection.
*the Window-alourus is dedicated to one of my gaffers who would run outside and rip a leafy branch off a tree so he could rig his Leafalourus to cast shows on the scene.

March 14, 2010 at 7:28 pm in reply to: DLT tape archive that will catalog as a library too.I think we’re missing the “library” aspect of this discussion. Maybe you’re thinking of something like Final Cut Server to “library” your shots.
I’ve been using CATDv to log and library our footage for the last year. It’s worked out very well for us. I let it make proxies of the footage with a window-burn. Those I save in a special place on my server. In that way I can remove the footage from one of the editing systems, and yet have full access to the footage and log notes to find anything for future work. One interesting thing for us, as documentarians, it can pull in the full written transcripts of the interview footage, complete with time code. It just pops into what they call the Verbatim Logger. You can then even do word searches in there and it will pop right to the shot. Now that was cool and helped a bunch on the last project: “Didn’t Shari say XYZ?” and bingo, there it was without having to listen to a single frame.
You can also construct basic timelines in the system which then open directly in Final Cut. That helped a lot on deadline when the writer would put a little something together based on his thoughts, and I was able to simply open it in Final Cut and it was populated with the original footage.Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.

Wow, gotta agree with that. Plus you’re leaving out a lot of issues like speed, system power, storage capacity, and offline v. conform and finish. I haven’t checked out the new codecs for the 5D and FCP7. Anyone know how they relate to 8 and 10 bit uncompressed? I might have some 5D “footage” coming in sometime in the near future. But my output will be primarily web for that project.
