I have an issue and have not yet been able to find it on the forum. I have been looking for 2 days now and have not gotten my answer so if it has been answered I apologize in advance.

What I am trying to do is add Closed Captioning to my 30 min broadcast show. We do all of our switching, and overlays in a tricaster, however NewTek does not support CC. NewTek also says that encoders are not supported on their systems making it impossible for us to encode through the tricaster.

    With that said

The rout that we want to go is to export the video footage to an mpeg send it to a FCP system and add the CC.

We have found a program that will create a SCC file called MovCaptioner in which we have done a few test runs and made some .scc files.

Now on to my problems and questions.

My problems are…. When I print to video (FCP) it gives me the following error:
Warning: The current video output device or format does not support Closed Captioning data.

I am exporting to a MINI DV tape (which is what one of our 4 stations has asked for as a delivery format) through a Panasonic HVX200 A.

With that not working I have also tried to use compressor and the .SCC file and it does not show up on any of the files that I have exported. In fact it doesn’t even recognize the cc in quicktime, itunes or even vlc. I have both Itunes and Quicktime set up to play CC when available and neither will show the CC.

    So my questions are…

How Do I add CC through Final Cut Pro 7 and Compressor…
Is it possible to make a deliverable copy on a DVD that has a CC track for the stations and if so how do I do that?

    Thanks in advance.

Sorry, CC doesn’t PRINT TO VIDEO via firewire. You have to have a qualified capture card to do this. The Matrox MXO2, and now the AJA Kona LHi and Kona 3 do this. And you have to output via Component or SDI.

    Shane,

Thank you… I believe we have an option to go to tape via SDI out… but we still have to get the CC onto the video.

After some tinkering I realized that using Quicktime Conversion does not add a Time code to the video and there for was not working with the CC… Once this was fixed I was able to get the CC embeded…. Now the problem is that Compressor is adding a white stripe on the right side of the screen and compressing the rest of the video to the left portion of the screen.. I dont think this is an issue with the MovCaptioner… but something that Compressor is doing… as the previews through MovCaptioner are fine.

Is there a way to get rid of this white stripe in Compressor?

Sorry, no clue. I have yet to deal with CC. I always get a dub made with it embedded. Waiting for the day when I can do this.

    Hi There,

the HVX wont support captioning, but i believe any of the Sony DSR VTRs or Panasonic DVCPro decks will accept captioning over firewire. We’re using a DSR-25 and DSR-1500A printing to tape with a CC embedded DV file from Macaption.

unfortunately I’ve been dealing with this for years. We have pretty much avoided the issue by creating DVDs. And most of the time use of the subtitle track is what’s used.

For tape we always send a copy out and someone else would process the text to CC and insert it on (what is it line 21?) the videotape for us. So the one tape had the video embedded. But that was before switching to FCS.

Maybe getting the station to accept another format is the easiest solution for everyone.
I have an old encoder in the rack, but that stuff is all analog anyway. There are others out there, but I have no idea if they work going onto a DV tape.

    you can try these guys:

Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.

It won’t work on mini-dv tape as its 720×480. the line 21 data gets stripped off
    just like a dvd.

    you need a D1 486 sequence.

I use automatic sync. I submit an audio file and a transcript text document of the script.
they send back a quicktime with the line 21 data that I put over the video track
then edit to tape on betacam.

    Hi everyone,
I’d like to clear up a few misconceptions in this thread.

First off, Shane and Chris, Final Cut Pro 7 most definitely CAN print to DV tape via Firewire with closed captions. We even have a video tutorial for it here: Print to DV tape with closed captions in FCP7. All that is needed is the proper sequence settings, and a properly formatted caption file such as one generated by MacCaption. I suspect the OP’s problem is due to a problem with the sequence settings or the captions file.

David, the HVX200 can record DV with closed captions via Firewire as it doesn’t touch the DV data stream. However, it will not convert the DV VAUX closed captions into line 21 captions on the analog outputs; it only works in and out via Firewire. You can pop the HVX200-recorded DV tape into another deck and then the captions will come out on line 21.

MacCaption can also add the closed captions directly to an MPEG-2 file. Compressor only exports CEA-608 data into MPEG-2 (contrary to the FCP manuals, Compressor does not output CEA-708 at all, we’ve tested it) which is the old analog captioning standard. Another idiosyncrasy of Compressor is that is requires a SCC file formatted slightly different than the one used for FCP print to DV tape. Fortunately MacCaption has the necessary features to deal with all of these issues.

    Hope this helps,

    Hey Chris,

FYI, for Final Cut Pro 7 (and unfortunately only for version 7) can indeed print-to-video via FireWire to DV (720×40) with just an SCC file. That should end up saving folks a fair bit of coin and hassle.

The same workflow at our end, upload an audio file and get back captions. https://www.automaticsync.com/captionsync/markets/broadcast/ is the link for anyone else who needs an SCC and/or the black quicktime MOV for D1 (our Digital NLE Caption file).

Hey Tim, what did you do to get the CC embeded? This is the problem that I am currently having right now.
