uncompressed 8 bit and apple pro res
Dear sir, i have captured my HDCAM tapes using the APPLE PRO RES 422 but when i saw someone else capturing HDCAM tapes with uncompressed 8 bit 4:2:2 i was in a shock from the difference in quality… If i know want to change to uncompressed 8 bit after finishing my edit how is that possible?

You recapture all the footage to 8bit Uncompressed.
We’ve run tests here and have not seen any discernable difference between ProRes and Uncompressed viewing playback on a 50″ Panasonic Pro HD screen and a projected 12′ image from a Panasonic DLP Pro Projector.
The quality of the final product is wholly reflected by the quality of the original material.

yeah, there really shouldn’t be a big difference visually between the two. I used to capture HDCAM in 8 or 10 bit uncompressed but don’t bother anymore. For us it’s a decision between HQ or not.
If you’re seeing a big difference in your footage I’d look elsewhere in the chain.Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.

HQ is only necessary for 10bit or higher material, generally anything over 1080. We only do ProRes for all our material.

HDCam tape is 8bit with 3:1:1 compression on tape.
ProRes in all flavors is 10 bit 4:2:2 when used as a capture codec.You do not say what computer or how the files were captured, if you captured on low powered computer or as anything other than HD there could be a huge difference in the file quality.
There is also a huge difference between HDCam tapes and HDCamSR tape in quality of the imagery.
It all gets down to how it was recorded.

All our stuff has been HDCAM for years. We have a Kona on the MacPro. ProRes 422 looks great even compared to 8 bit and 10 bit.
Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.

Was a huge difference in the qualit”If you are seeing a huge difference, there is a problem at your end. ProRes has been tested up and down by many experienced professionals (search for Gary’s work on it). You need to investigate what might be causing your issues before you continue using it, or else you might very well end up with an inferior looking product..

But you don’t say which one looks better.
The perfect codec to capture HDCAM is 8b Unc.
If you are able to work with 8b Unc, do it. Then finish in 10b (Unc or Prores).

I presume both the ProRes and Uncompressed are in the same pixel aspect. If you are seeing a difference, perhaps you are not maintaining 1920 x 1080 with both codecs.
