A firewire hub will help a lot. On my machine the external drive has multiple ports so the camera goes in there, and the drive into the computer. You can get an external raid that’s USB/FW400/FW800/eSata. Works in all sorts of conditions and the raid gives you better performance and some level of data protection.

The issue is one of the use of reference files and time of rendering. Of course cross-rendering will take more time. No one else is recommending multiple layers of mixed codecs and cross-rendering as a positive workflow.Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.

little hard to tell from your description, but you need to move your render files as well. Well, not necessarily, it depends on where you want them. You do want to define where your render files are located. I have to deal with this all the time. I have a couple projects that I bring home to work on (yeah, I know. I don’t have a life other than this). FCP sees the original and portable drive as two different locations even though they’re named the same (the OS can’t be fooled that way). So I have to relink everything, and define the render files as living on the portable when I open from the portable drive. As an aside I make the process smooth by using ChronoSync to make sure the portable matches the original drive, including all the project files and the render files. Makes my life easier.

something is off the rails here. The footage is supposed to in ProRes BEFORE it gets into a timeline. Otherwise a lot of rendering is in the offing.

What are the machine specs? For me it would be about 30 secs. A self contained rather longer

no problem with the upgrade here on Leopard. On the snow Leopard machine I did a nuke and pave, then installed SL and then FCS3. No problems at all.
