Yes, the reason I use CatDV — it fills in all the blanks, literally and figuratively. No editing system out there deals well with logging. And logging is really the key to anything non-linear. It’s the logs, not the editing software.

I’m sure Interplay would be helpful, but it’s doubtful, here. We’re just too small a shop now. I really don’t ‘have to worry about sharing media, anymore. I’m down to exporting a project so I can work on it elsewhere.
The fact is I’ve gotten spoiled by the way CatDV works with FCP. It’s been so nice when my partner can rough out a cut in CatDV and I can open it fully populated in FCP. I’m guessing I’ll have to have two different approaches: one for tape-based media and one for file-based. If each project was separate and distinct it would be easy. But we’re constantly repurposing footage. It’s actually more important for me to have all my CatDV proxies online so we can draw from dozens of different shoots to build a show. Lots more paper and pencils, I’m guessing—forward into the past. Still I”m expecting things to get better. After all, despite all the improvements and capabilities of current NLEs, there are still functions missing, or less poorly implemented than those of some systems from the 80s. There’s room for improvement. At least I’m not alone in wanting/needing a better connection between Avid and CatDV. Think of all those poor bastards out there who haven’t caught onto CatDV yet.

The repairs to the MySQL file helped. Turns out that I had a couple of bad video files that CatDV kept choking on. I deleted those files (they wouldn’t play anyway) and CatDV started working again.
Note that there were some QT referenced files of timelines that were output from FCP for visual reference for audio mixing in Soundtrack Pro. CatDV really did NOT like those files. I trashed those as well. I stopped using them long ago but there were a few still resident on this raid set. Those referenced files had been consistently problematic and I’d been using fully rendered version of the video for sync.Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.

Now I can’t even get the CatDV server to start. I just sent the server log file and screen grabs of the error messages off to support.

We use CatDV’s editing function all the time, with a writer roughing out a sequence which gets moved into FCP and opened fully populated with proxies. I don’t notice any accuracy issues, but then I’m not looking for any. I’m recutting and adjusting anyway. I’m a lot more concerned that when I’m finished with the proxies and I load up the masters I’m going to have the same cut. And I do. I use motion jpegs for proxies and work frame to frame. They’re tiny (and ugly) and I get to store ALL our footage “online” all the time so I always have access to everything. And I get a one-to-one relationship frame to frame between the proxies and masters. This is really our greatest use and value of CatDV.

I pulled the old pref file from the time machine backup. Seems to have done the trick. Should probably note that somewhere. I did the same on the other machine.
Thanks for the help.

Ah, yes. But is that what he’s talking about? To me it sounded like he was making a directory somewhere so he could store his server-based catalog there. That’s what I was talking about.

workgroup server, so there’s no Production Group (is there?)
I’ll go look for the plist and see if that helps.Non-linear: all the time and nothing but.
