And Todd confirms there is an alternate method!

This should be fairly easy to do using shape layers and repeaters.

Make a rectangle shape adjust the width and height then add a repeater.

Set the repeater transform position to 0 in the x any y. Set the number of copies to your desired number. Set the rotation to the number of 360/ the number of copies.

Animate size and position for the rectangle path.

In addition to Vishesh’s suggestions, I suggest you look at Trapcode Form and Trapcode Particular.

Form can easily produce a grid of icons each with a different color. Though how you are going to generate 1500 distinct colors may be more of an issue.

I haven’t had this issue, though the FCP 7 sequences I bring across are simpler than the one you describe.

The only suggestions I have are check the source files for anything unusual, compression, format etc. Premiere is much more forgiving than After Effects when it comes to file formats. No video formats with long GOPs or H.264. ProRes has never given me a problem.

If you’ve used any 3rd party effects in FCP these could also be the culprit.

The method you describe will work. Its a matter of rotoscoping the whale so it can be placed in front of the text.

If you have CS 5.5 or CS 6 you can use the rotobrush to speed making a matte.

See a tutorial on how to use it here: https://vimeo.com/11330476

As John said, animate the end opacity and the number of copies in the repeater.

I’ll add another vote for a 3D app or as Ted suggests a third party 3D plug-in like Element, Shape Shifter or Zaxwerks Invigorator.

Much of the work can be done in AE CS6: the 3D rings, cubes, shadows, text animations, card wipe etc. The sphere is another matter, you’ll need a 3D app or plug in for that.

I agree with Dave, you’re better off nesting the comp in a render comp of the desired dimensions.

I might suggest another workflow for your situation. Create a “Final Render” composition at the 640×480 resolution and place your working comp in it.

  • [Tim Drage] “Ridley Walker is a great novel!

    True that.
