Activity Forums Adobe After Effects How do I?

  • Posted by Robin Lewis on February 2, 2013 at 5:17 pm

I want the whale in the image attached to jump infront of the Text, IU was wondering if there is a simple way to do this which is not tracking frame by frame with a matt.

I would have thought you would have

    Layer 1, Video
    Layer 2 Text
Layer 3, Duplicate video with Animated matt tracking around the whale.

Can you advise of maybe a better way to do this?

    Thanks \\Robin

The method you describe will work. Its a matter of rotoscoping the whale so it can be placed in front of the text.

If you have CS 5.5 or CS 6 you can use the rotobrush to speed making a matte.

See a tutorial on how to use it here: https://vimeo.com/11330476

If you have CS6 you may want to try Rotobrush. It can make rotoscoping (animated mattes) creation less painful.

I have to tweak the Splashing water a bit but I just did a few tweaks from the Rotoscope bursh’s selection for the whale and exported an Alpha channel file, in to FCP and BOOM done.

Here is the clip I made last night, its not perfect but was made within 30mins of the tips you gave me, the biggest challenge is the splashing water and I think I treated this pretty crudely. but have a look and let me know what you think.

Robin, I think you did an excellent job on both the whale and water. The dark nature of the shot probably was very forgiving of any issues you might have encountered. To my eye its a very clean and attractive piece.Good job!
