With a notebook, can’t install an internal hard drive.

I’m keenly aware of the dangers of using any computer screen to color correct. However, everything I’m working on these days is for internet (Flash), so such monitors are actually just fine. Were these for TV broadcast, that would require a true RGB monitor, but they are not. Actually, I’ve done pretty well for the few times the results needed to be seen on TVs via DVD with my old Dell CRT. However, it won’t work with the MacBook very well, and time for a flat screen.

It turns out that the problem is you need to check TWO settings for video velocity display:

–View/show envelopes (be sure there’s a check mark)
–View/video envelopes — be sure all are checked, especially “velocity”

Thanks, Ed. I think first I’ll try setting the keyboard options back to factory settings (I think I can do that.) If that doesn’t do it, I’ll go to the more extreme of resetting everything back.

OK, looks like there is no keyboard shortcut for full-screen. Instead, I’ve set up alt-d-2 to make the preview monitor take over most of the screen (and alt-d-1 to return it to normal.)

I still have not made up my mind whether or not to go the Mac route (since there’s a lot of work pressure on me to learn and use FCP ) or a much cheaper but powerful PC such as:
–E6850 Core 2 Duo 3 Ghz / 1333 / 4M
–4 GB RAM
–couple of hard drives
–video card (Nvidia 8600 GTS PCI-Express w/256M
etc. About $1,500 vs $4,000 for a Mac Pro reasonably equipped…

At one time posters here had recommendations for PC vendors. In any case, there’s a local computer shop that can make to order. Good to support the locals.

Great. I get it: by “Media Drive” you mean a separate hard drive for the raw video, which is also very necessary for editing in Vegas. The Raid set-up makes great sense. When these crash, do you have to replace them, or is there a way to restore their usability (though not their contents, I presume)?

Wow! Thanks for all the quick responses. I think I get it: forget the iMac. Think refurbished Mac Pro plus non-apple vendors for the extra needed parts.

I am not at all clear about the “media drive.” Am I correct that I do NOT need to add one to a Mac Pro to run FCP?
